Going from Switzerland to Syria must be the most drastic change in tone Barbs will ever have to pull off

This has to be the most neutral episode of all.

I was somewhere on a beach in Italy and heard a language spoken by tourists which resembled pure latin with some weird swiss german mountainous melodical intonation and influence and then found out by chatting to them it was romansh. What an incredible experience.

I was waiting for this the last 3 or 4 years, thank you so much! I have a few other things for anyone who is curious about other weird Swiss stuff:
So, just to completely fortify the stereotypes about milk + Switzerland, Rivella, which is kind of like our national soda drink, contains 35% milk serum. xD It doesn't taste like milk at all though, don't worry.^^
Swiss German is a bit hard to explain, it's on the border between being an extremely heavy dialect and being an own language. Most Swiss dialects are so heavy and strange that Germans usually have no clue what you're saying, for example "hesch d'Finke agleit?" is "hast du die Pantoffeln angezogen" in German.
Swiss neutrality is kind of strange because it isn't pacifist at all, and you get reminded of that all the time when you live here. For example on a nice forest walk here where I live you suddenly cross into a Sperrgebiet where there are surface-to-air missiles, just stacked on the meadow pointing to the sky, next to cows and farms.
About the voting, yes we're basically voting all the time because of Volksinitiativen, which are policy changes etc. proposed by people and groups of the country gathered through signatures. So you get voting ballots in the mail very often, not just for elections, but to vote on all kinds of things.
Schwingen is basically Swiss farmer wrestling, and the prize for 1st place is actually usually a live bull.^^ Also, a psychologist I had years ago was a Schwingerkönig. xD

Fun fact: In Greece we (still) call the country Helvetia and their citizens Helveti!

Jsut in case someone actually cares: Lauterbrunnen was mentioned in Tolkiens letters as the inspiration for Rivendell in Lord of the Rings, as he had been there as a teenager and the beauty of the place had just been mindblowing to him.

I'm American, but my great grandfather's whole family was from the Canton of St. Gallen (which borders Liechtenstein & Austria). I have heard it said that Swiss homesickness is very powerful and that has been true in my family; we never got over how beautiful Switzerland is. Our family has been coming back to visit for generations ever since we emigrated. I am not able to travel much but I hope to go there someday, too. Love to Switzerland from the US!

20:03- something I find funny about the Swiss mercenary thing leading up to their current neutrality is that so many other European powers used Swiss mercenaries and said mercenaries were so good that following the Napoleonic Wars the the other European powers essentially said "Swiss Guard too OP, ban from server", except for the Pope because he is special.

About that conquering: An alliance of some of the cantons that would later make up Switzerland ruled, for THREE years (1515–1518), the DUCHY of Milan, which was bigger than all of the Swiss cantons combined. It all came down at the Battle of Marignano when the French discovered the joy of firearms, while the Swiss were still stuck in their medieval ninja tactics (consisting of long pikes and sheer will).

In World War 1, Switzerland had a tiny army, but a populace of skilled riflemen.
Kaiser Wilhelm II asked the Swiss : what will 250, 000 of you do if i invaded with an army of 500, 000?
The Swiss replied - We’ll shoot twice and go home

I have just recently discovered this youtube channel. I LOVE it. Geography has always been my favorite topic, followed by history. Thank you very much Paul, for creating this.

I honestly think that as far as "technological" discoveries by the Swiss, the early modern pike block infantry formation REALLY should not be as understated as it is here. The Swiss mercenaries essentially changed the way warfare was conducted in Europe for centuries to come, and that had a lot of big BIG impacts on how European culture itself changed, the influence this had on feudal societies morphing into absolute monarchies, the effect on the Italian city states and so on.

Besides that, what can you really say but awesome episode! Well done as always!
