no slander to anyone out there who works at petco of course😅 the company itself is the problem, not the employees. i know there’s plenty of pet store workers out there who take pride in their work and go above and beyond to educate themselves about the animals they work with. the problem is that doing that should be a requirement of training, not just a “if you want to” type of thing. ❤

As someone who’s worked at a corporate owned pet store: Please don’t take what we’re trained to tell you as fool proof advice. At most were taught bare minimum basic guidelines but the truth is a lot of our literature is outdated and those of us who genuinely care have been unable to get anything updated as the current literature is deemed “good enough.” There are those of us that deeply love and care for the animals, and we take our own time and resources to learn how to care for these animals to properly prepare new owners as best we can but at the end of the day we’re still constrained by the subpar tools corporate gives us.

I like that you use your real voice for 'serious rat talk' videos and computerized voice for 'silly rat times' videos. Gives a nice contrast to know what to expect.

This is good and educational. I hope everyone who wants chaos potatoes will see this.

You shouldn't pick up any creature by it's tail, period

Awwww, I love the vibrating happy faces they make when they're bruxing! Happy rat chitters are my favorite!

Yeah fuck pet stores. My very first rat was a baby who wasn’t fully weaned and they still let me take him home and he died a week later. I’ll never forgive them for that.

The "open to learning" thing is so important. These really are "learn by doing" pets. So many people in rat care communities scream bloody murderer in defense of their own agenda, even if its wrong. I'm finally uploading a video next Tuesday about why Petco sucks. (I AM NOT a rat care page. Just an old lady page) But I have been too scared to do it for a long time because I don't want to get attacked for ever buying rats from them to begin with. At first we didnt know, And I can't even go in the place anymore e en for food because my heart is too big and I always want to rescue the last rat. I can't even go in there. Nor do I want to. There are a lot of learning curves to rat care. A lot of us got turned off real quick and turned away from rat care communities because People somehow do not know how to teach without screaming, assuming, and having blood and steam coming out of their face holes. So thank you for this video. Thank you for communicating with us like a human. I really really appreciate it. We love our babies so so much. Petco sucks on so many levels.

I worked at a PetSmart and I knew I wasn't the most educated on the animals we sold. I insisted to customers that they should do their own research. And that a bigger cage / enclosure is always better. I'd tell them it's as if you're keeping a dog in one room for their entire life.

Actually the employees at our petco location usually specifically go against petco's way-too-lax caresheet and advice, and we're all people that genuinely care about the animals rather than those horror story locations (thank goodness)

I only picked up my ratties once by the tail, because they got lost in my couch for a week and decided to make it their home.

When I finally decided that it was the only way to catch them, I 100% thought they were going to freak on me and try to bite. Not only did they not want to bite me, they still wanted treats from me as soon as they went back to their cage.

Rats are the sweetest little little babies ever 🥺🥺

Facts for any animal, not just rats!

Just because an item is labeled for an animal doesn’t mean it is appropriate for it, both in pet stores and online.
Many small animal treats may include ingredients which are not appropriate for them.
I can say from my own research a majority of cages for hamsters are not appropriate. Same for Guinea pigs.
Always research appropriately sized cages, appropriate diets, etc!

There is an organization that sets standards for hamster care that is great. And shockingly Facebook groups can be a really great place to begin searching although obviously always cross check the information you get online.
(Also the Facebook groups can be super toxic, so Y’know)

As someone who works at a pet store and owns rats but has coworkers who don’t, find your own research first, then ask questions YOU know the answer to. It will help you find the one person who knows things.

So an explanation for what degloving is, it's basically the skin becoming detached from an appendage or limb and peeling off. It's often seen with serious trauma, such as burn victims. This is why infections can happen, because it's a giant open wound being exposed to the environment.

Thanks so much! Our vet told us literally the other day that rats were the only rodents that you COULD hold by the tail, well now I know that was wrong. Lol

There’s a family I watch that lives in an RV full time and they got a couple of rats and plexi glassed all of the sides of their cage and refused to acknowledge when people said this was terrible for their respiration 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm so glad this channel snuck into my recommended. You clearly care a lot about your pets and making sure others interested in caring for rats take good care of them. Really sweet and funny.
