Easiest way to crack open a spiky sea urchin for the uni!

Показать описание
Rinse the shell of the sea urchin and take out the beak (or the mouth) by inserting a sharp pair of scissors, grab, twist, and pull it out. This creates the opening for you to insert 2 spoons with the tips of the back against each other like this. Squeeze the top of the handles and it will crack the uni in half. Dump out the insides that is filled with digested kelp and pick out the leftover kelp that is stuck on gonads. Rinse it until the water comes out clear. You can use your spoon to pick out the gonads or if they're loose, scoop ithem out with your hands gently. Wash off the uni and soak it in salt water for a few minutes. Scoop the uni onto a dry paper towel and enjoy!

Sea urchins are decimating the kelp forests of Central and Southern California largely due to climage change-related issues. So, eat those unis and take some of the pressure off this delicate biome!!

Fun fact: sea urchins don't have pain receptors, so they won't feel any pain when you crack them open.

whenever we go island hopping here in the philippines, our guide dives to get urchins then cracks it open for us to eat! we sometimes add a little bit of vinegar as well :) so fresh and tastes so good!

In Chile we also eat them with lemon juice, chopped onion, cilantro and a bit of salt 👌🏻

Never wash them in fresh water. Removes a lot of the flavor, and causes the roe to degrade faster

They don’t have pain receptors so you don’t have to feel bad about eating them and there decimating kelp forests so please eat as many as you can lol.

The first uni I had was horrible. I had to go to a very good restaurant and talk to a fellow diner who happened to be an uni Connaisseur to learn what to look out for. Talking to passionate people about great food is so much fun.
The second uni was amazing by the way!

I don't see any comments of Americans being disrespectful.

Reading this comment section proves Americans need to leave their country at least once in their lives... Anywhere else... And you'll automatically become somewhat educated... As someone who grew up eating cow tongue, hearts, liver and brain... This is just another source of protein.

Be sure to get your live uni from a reputable spot because not all sea urchins are edible

Never eaten a sea urchin, but I think it’s funny that they look like already-fried fish!

I feel like I could definitely eat this but don't tell me what it is until I eat it

In New Zealand we call it Kina.
We eat it straight out of the shell on the beach after diving for the kina
