I'm dating myself a bit, but when I was a kid (60's), I sold Burpee seeds as a way to make a little money. Burpee used to sell kits of, I think, 150-200 packs of seeds for charities, the young entrepreneur, etc. Of course, most folks just wanted the flowers and some herbs. Not a lot of vegetable gardeners in the Chicago suburbs back then.
So, I had quite a few leftovers that I kept in a shoebox under my bed. A couple of years later, my dad figured we could put those seeds to use, as no one would buy old seeds. So we made a little 10x15 garden in the corner of the back yard. We planted watermelon, corn, iceburg lettuce, tomatoes (we planted them straight into the garden, didn't know better), green (bell) peppers, onions, carrots, and cantaloupe. What really shocked everyone, even my dad, was that the watermelon not only sprouted, but the sprouts were 4" high, overnight!
About half of the seeds germinated from each, except the cantaloupe (yep, even the tomatoes, they just took longer). It was my first experience with homegrown veggies, that I grew. The taste was something that got me hooked ever since.
Edit: The thing that stuck with me most, and I think changed me a bit, was when my dad and mom thanked me and my brother for providing our food one night.

Went to the craft store & got a plastic photo keeper carrier, with smaller 4 x 6 (by 1 inch thick) plastic photo "boxes" inside...depending on the thickness of the seed packets, you should be able to get several packets in each little box! I labeled each of the little boxes, and separated them according to planting season. The photo boxes range in price from $12 to $15, and you can save even more with 50% off coupon at Michael's!

Seeds are such a massive miracle.. just another massive example of how it’s Obvious that Our God created all of this. Great video on seeds! My wife also lives to throw out what she thinks is just my trash :-) I gotta keep eyes on her

i took corn seeds from our basement, they havent been used for over 20 years, because my mother prefers buying new ones from the store, im 27 and got my own garden finally.
Anyway those seeds are from my grandmother and im not joking, only 1 seed from 2 whole corns has sprouted. i take care of it in my garden and hope for the best.

For the really frugal (or recyclers), you can make pouches out of glossy magazine pages, preferably with photos as they are darker, and put them in a security postal envelope. Between the dark print on the inside of the envelope and the magazine page, it should be plenty dark. Making the pouches could be a fun activity for the kiddos, too.

Wow. Very informative. I learned a lot! Thanks.
FYI, I bought my attachments for food saving jars at garage and estate sales for $1-$2 each.

Miner’s lettace!!! Never buy seeds again. Just ask me for some. My whole yard is full of them. The chickens love them and in these mountains they are more like a weed. However I have heard they are highly nutritious, and I have eaten them. They’re a bland, juicy type of plant. They’re tastiest before they flower.

I try to grow as much Heirloom plants as I can and store the collected seeds properly. I also will typically buy some seed packs for carrots, onions and hybrids or hard to find plants. Anyway, for the last two years the seed packs have had horrible germination rates. Out of a pack of carrot seeds less than 10 seeds germinated. To some it up...the seeds they are selling are junk or they have been "spiked" All the seed packs I bought....failed. All my Heirloom seeds are doing great right next to the empty rows?

Think if I get seeds, I'll vac seal in a food saver bag that can be re-vacuumed and keep in dark cool place in house. I've tried the frig once and it was a disaster. All lost.

I couldn't understand what you said when you gave the type of tomato you plant for canning...San what?? I went back & listened 3 times but not getting it. I even paused when you held up the sealed packet but it was too small for me to read 😪

Don't know if it's true, I heard that seed need a very tiny bit of oxygen to stay viable.
