I have rarely been as hyped as i was when i watched Rock Lee drop his weights for the first time. Him and Might Guy should hold a special place in every Naruto fan's heart.

During the two episodes of the Rock Lee vs Gaara fight, Kishimoto decided to let Rock Lee experience what it was like to be the main character. A wise decision so he became one of the fans' favorites. And Shikamaru who also took over the role as the main character replacing Naruto in the Hidan & Kakuzu Invasion Arc for a while. He really is the GOAT for real!

The only difference between Nick's list and my own is for the Land of Waves arc I had Haku as the best. Even though he's technically a villain, he was extremely complex and made you question whether or not he could really be considered a villain as opposed to a victim. His presence in the storyline is what makes it such an emotional arc because he's the catalyst for the first character development we see in the story between Naruto, Sasuke, and Zabuza. To me, his response to his own trauma makes him one of the most "human" characters Kishimoto ever created.

Hiruzen 100% best Konoha Crush character. Little ass 8th grade me hearing him giving that speech about the strength of the leaf and the will of fire absolutely lit something in me and was one of the moments that solidified the fact that I was going to watch this entire show no matter how long it is. And I did.

Edit: and don't even get me started on how much I cried during his funeral. I always hated young Konohamaru, he annoyed the hell out of me, but seeing him crying at the loss of his grandfather and basically last remaining family (on screen at least) broke me

Very solid list; I would personally put Zabuza or Haku for Land of Waves simply based off of how incredibly dynamic they were as villains with such a compelling relationship. Sasuke Retrieval is super tough, I think Choji has the most compelling battle between all of the Konoha 12 (besides Naruto & Sasuke of course). But then when the sand siblings show up to save the day, there is something particularly cathartic about Gaara saving Lee considering their history, it shows great character development for Gaara, also Kimmimaro was peak in both design and abilities.

Hear me out when I say Choji is the best from the Sasuke retrieval arc. He was nothing but a goof ball, always snacking and whining. But he stepped up to the guy who stopped the whole squad dead in their tracks, took that red pill of guaranteed death to stop him from going after his friends, and butterfly bombed himself into an absolute legend.

I like the fact that you had Naruto as the top in the search for Tsunade, but also because it's an important part of jiraiyas development as well. He's spent so much time trailing after orochimaru and keeping out of village business and then obviously we find out his backstory as minatos teacher and Naruto's godfather, it really gives a lot of weight to the development of their relationship.

Yes I remember Hiruzen vs orochimaru being quite insane in the anime. It showed us the highest level of technique we had ever seen, and showed us forbidden jutsu, and it showed what a hokage truly is: the defender of the village until death. His sacrifice was beautiful, and I remember being so angry that orochimaru survived the reaper. That’s because kishimoto wrote a great character in hiruzen and I was sad to see his sacrifice sorta be in vain.

An interesting phenomenon I have found in the last 8-14months is that most people who start Naruto "now" consider the first few episodes the first arc. The way they are portraying the series is "Graduation" arc, then "land of waves" arc.
The justification for it is actually pretty solid, the episodes before Naruto leaves the village there actually is a small character arc.
Kuruma sealed in Naruto (inciting event) Naruto fails the graduation exam but is told another way (call to action) Naruto uses the forbidden technique to protect the person he cares about most (defining moment) Naruto is paired with his worst rival during team selection (the awakening) kakashi beats team 7 and threatens to fail them (moment of enlightenment) Sasuke and Sakura break the rules and feeds Naruto knowing that doing so will cause them all to fail (near death experience) kakashi explains that by working as a team, even though he forbade it, they all pass(transformation moment) team 7 is told they are ready for a real mission(climax) leaving the village for the first time resolution.
And if this is enough to justify calling it an arc I submit Iruka-sensei for best character.
He knew Naruto's loneliness and tried to be there for him, knew what Naruto was but never held any ill will against him, had faith that Naruto could be great but refused to give him special treatment because it would only hurt his student in the long run.
