The Volkswagen Arteon FLOPPED. Here’s why.

The Volkswagen Arteon should’ve sold better but it was a flop. Did Bad Marketing Ruin the the Vw Arteon?

In a world where sedans were suddenly trying to be coupes and coupes were trying to be... well, something else entirely, Volkswagen thought, "Hey, why not join the party?"

Thus, the Volkswagen Arteon was born, a sleek and stylish attempt to cash in on a trend that had everyone scratching their heads. With its elongated contours and pretensions of exclusivity, the Arteon strutted onto the scene, ready to make a statement. But alas, it seemed to have missed the memo on what exactly that statement was supposed to be.

At first glance, the Arteon seemed like the love child of a sports car and a luxury sedan, but upon closer inspection, it was more like the awkward third wheel at a family reunion. Sure, it had all the trappings of a premium ride—a turbocharged engine, snazzy trim options, and a name that sounded like it belonged in a Latin textbook—but it somehow missed the mark. Maybe it was the front-wheel drive confusion in a world where rear-wheel drive reigned supreme, or perhaps it was the hefty price tag that had consumers scratching their heads. Whatever it was, the Arteon seemed to suffer from a severe case of mistaken identity.

In the end, the Volkswagen Arteon taught us a valuable lesson: sometimes, it's better to stick with what you know than try to reinvent the wheel. While it may not have revolutionized the sedan game, it certainly left an impression, albeit a slightly confused one. So, if you're in the market for a sedan that's more style than substance, the Arteon might be worth a second look. Just don't expect it to blow your socks off—or your budget. And remember, when it comes to cars, sometimes it's best to leave the Latin to the scholars and stick with good old-fashioned horsepower.

The biggest issue was the price. It entered Audi and BMW territory but it was a VW. Depreciation has rocked these cars. I just purchased a 23’ SEL R-Line with 10k miles for $32K.

I bought a '23 SEL Premium and love it! I could have bought an Audi A7 but I couldn't justify $40, 000 more for the Audi. Some people need the little rings on the front but couldn't care less. The Arteon is 80% what the A7 is. Plus with two boys with long legs the back seat cannot be beaten by any car out there.

I bought a ‘23 Premium brand new because I heard production was ending. I got the dealer invoice price, so around 49k. There’s no other car on the market that has all of the features of the Premium trim, 300hp, DSG, AWD, semi-autonomous driving and a hatchback for that price. The only comparable car was a Kia Stinger and I wouldn’t be caught dead in one.

With a slightly de-tuned Golf R engine, but more room and luxury, in 10-15 years I’m willing to bet I can sell this car to an enthusiast for big money. This review will end up being the true flop — mark my words.

I purchased a lightly used premium SEL R line recently.

I have to say this is a fantastic vehicle in the mid $30k range.

I can think of no new vehicle on the market, in that price range that will come close in overall quality and features. The new Accords and Camry's feel like toy cars by comparison.

I wouldn't buy one at $50k...but below $40k, its a no brainer.
So far the insurance coverage cost is the only con I've seen.

A 2023 Arteon SEL R AWD with a Stage 2 APR tune can run the quartermile in 12.2 seconds @ 114 mph. No slouch.

I purchased a 22' premium trim brand new... Two years later still in love with it.... The most underrated sedan in the US market... At 52K, VW fail the Arteon with the fake exhaust and too plain interior for a flagship car, not to mentioned the lack of marketing and not bringing to the US the shooting brake or the R model... Most people don't care about this car because they don't even know it exist...two of my friends own a bodyshop and the other a tire shop, neither one have seen one before until I pulled into their buisness... If VW would have given this car the RS3 engine, it would have kill the competition in performance and practicality

Its a vag group. You can buy r version with "320hp" and 0-60 of 4, 7 s. Same 2.0 tsi engine used in golf r/audi s3/ leon cupra. Put a remap on it and you can easy 400+hp. Arteon is so much better value than audi a5. Uve got same build quality, same engine, same suspension parts with more features inside for fracture of a price of a5.
PS. GOLF R was never FWD.

Love my 2014 Passat SE TDI. 40+ mpg on the highway. 98000+ miles and still killing it. Torque on these rides is insane. Arteons are sweet, wouldn’t mind having one.

Also about a year ago my brother and went to a classic car show in Geneva, IL. Now there were Cords, Rolls, Cadillacs, all from the 30s, Porsches and other exotic cars. As i was leaving 2 men in a Ferrari 308 pulled along side of me. I looked at and said nice car. They replied saying we were admiring yours. I smiled the rest of day. 21 in Red

Just bought a used 23 SE R-Line (yes the FWD one that they didn't sell hardly any of). I love it, but I would not have paid $46k new for it. It gets 38 MPG highway, does a pretty commendable job putting 295 lb/ft of torque down, the travel assist tech is excellent, and it has almost as much cargo room as a Rav-4.

The insurance cost is kind of wild though, double my 2019 Genesis that I bought new.

I owned a 2021 Arteon SEL R-Line 4Motion. Beautiful car...however I have to agree with you about the Platform of the vehicle. For the price they were asking for this vehicle it needed to have the VR6 3.0 Turbo. This would've been a GAME CHANGER for the Arteon. They would've sold these cars at that top dollar, just like the Golf R's.

The only problem the Arteon had was the name of the manufacturer because buyers are so brand-conscious in this segment. . Having owned BMWs and Mercs I bought one and found it to be a wonderful car with the space, style, presence and elegance it's competitors lacked. Fully kitted it was still cheaper than the German competition from Audi A6, BMW 5 and Mercedes E. It is still being built as a station wagon which however lacks the dynamic style and in reality hardly offers more usable space in the trunk. Living in Germany we fail to understand why Americans regard impressive 0 - 60 mph figures as being so important when in reality the low speed limits make it frustrating to drive powerful cars in the States. Here in Germany, traffic permitting, we tend to drive much faster on the highways even with less powerful cars. With the Arteon I could sometimes cover a 200 mile trip in just over two hours, averaging almost 100 mph but most other cars with at least 200 hp are capable of doing the same.
The Arteon is a car for the connosieur who likes to drive something different and more interesting than the masses. Unfortunately the choice is becoming less and less.

I bought one last October and it works for me. I have always loved Passats especially the wagon. It has a larger trunk that a q3 or q5 Audi, more rear leg room than a Volvo 60. I think it failed because than did not even try to sell it. Used ones now are good buys. My 22 sel was about the same price as a grill but is much bigger, more powerful, and has all wheel drive.

I love my Arteon and I'm glad its so rare! Stage 2 tuned, Maxton Design full lip kit, Rotiform wheels, and Milltek exhaust. It really turns heads and is fun to drive!

The Arteon was not advertised well enough, bottom line.

The first couple of years in production before they went all-in on the Golf R power train, DSG, and premium features standard didn't do them any favors.

It's arguably one of the most beautiful cars on the road today. Enough room for a family with 2 teenage boys plus bags. The liftback hatch just makes sense. The way it puts down power won't rip your face off, but it pulls like a freight train on hilly or mountain terrain. AWD is a must for us, and it does that extremely well. It makes cross-country road trips a breeze with it's space, comfort, power, 500+ mile range, and consistent 30+ MPG fuel economy.

Comparable Audis are under-equipped and under-powered at the same price point. Compared to it's Audi cousins, it is a true value, and is way more attractive, in my opinion.

We love the Arteon so much that we bought TWO of them! One Kingfisher Blue, and one Moonstone grey, both 2023 SEL Premiums.

People stop to ask us about the cars everywhere we go. It gets way more attention than other premium, high horsepower, sporty, or "halo" cars I have owned in the past. When people find out why we have his-and-hers Arteons, we tell them:

They are just that good!

I have an Arteon. I like it quite a lot but there are issues. The new price for a non-Premium brand is obviously the biggest problem but there are many others. The interior quality and ambience is poor: there are rattles and creaks. Reliability is average at best with lots of issues with infotainment and electronics, particularly steering wheels in face lift models. The DSG gearbox (no torque converter here in Europe) is great but I've heard of a number of mechatronic failures resulting in repairs costing many thousands. The ride is excellent but it's not at all sporty. The design of the car is very dependent on colour. The yellows and deep reds are real head-turners but my silver Arteon just blends into the masses.

Arteon R for Europe with 320 horses is really cool, it even has a more powerful DSG-clutch (DQ500) and electronic automatic suspension.

I have a 21 Arteon SEL Premium R, and I love it. However, there are a few issues. When the exterior was updated, the interior needed Premium upgrades, such as similar to the ID7 with HUD, bigger screen, and quilted seat. The 2.5 5 cylinder should have been standard. The full R and wagon was needed also. Marketing and more marketing. Everywhere I go, people stare and ask what it is. The price, it shouldn't be no more than 48k to 49k for loaded 23. I am going to buy a 23 with new engine. I do love the car😊
