This episode covers the Suez Crisis of 1956 which came about after Egypt, under Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalised the Suez Canal. Britain, France and Israel then colluded to invade Egypt and retake the canal. Militarily this went well, but politically the crisis cost the allied powers far too much and so they withdrew in what was frankly a humiliating climbdown. Also it's the point in which Britain was officially no longer a superpower. So pretty important.

Recommended books:

The Arabs: A History by Eugene Rogan. A fantastic book that covers Arabic history from the Mamluk Sultanate to the modern day. Extremely detailed and pretty ambitious, too although be aware the author makes no attempt to hide their political biases.

Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945 by Tony Judt. Obviously this book only really tackles Suez from the perspective of the Europeans but does a great job in doing so. THE book for Cold War Europe.

U.K and France: I suppose it was a pretty aggressive thing to do to the Egyptians...

"Damnit France and Britain how could invade the Sinai like that?"
"We're sorry, we didn't think that you'd be so upset about us intervening in foreign affairs like that."
"What? No, I'm just mad you didn't talk to me about it first."

1956 is when it became final that Britain was no longer a superpower, leaving only the US and Soviets.

For most historians this was the event that, at least symbolically, marked the end of the British Empire and of Britain as a Global super power; after this crisis, the world was all centered around the Soviet Union and the USA for the decades that followed

In Canada, this is most known for the fact that our PM of the day, Lester B. Pearson, was the lead negotiator on the treaty, which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.

My Grandad was a paratrooper who fought in this conflict. He never talked about it much and sadly died recently from covid, so there’s a lot I’ll never know. Thank you for making this video to honour the legacy of all those involved and teach people about this forgotten invasion.

We need more information on wars in Africa, i feel they don't get enough recognition. Especially Angolan, Ogaden, and Rhodesian war. Edit: (And Congo war)

For the first time in the 20th century, Britian and France could no longer act with impunity. The embarrassment that must have caused among the upper crust, government and military officials and officers of these two countries, it can't be overstated.
