My annoyances: grey eye color for men in contemporary romances. There’s not that many people walking around with grey eyes. Stop it.

And my second one: I want to see a romance for a “plus sized” FMC and you know she’s plus size because of the cover or because it’s brought up once organically the way any author would describe any other character and then her size is never spoken of again. She just lives her life, achieves her goals, and gets the man she’s fallen for. And it’s not because he’s into any certain body type. He just thinks she’s the greatest thing to ever walk this earth.

9:31 That's the thing with Fae, there is no set rule. There are over 1, 000 different varient types and they basically adopt the charm and characteritics of the locals so they can blend in secretly without anyone knowing. Who are they? It is hard to say, but there are many different types and you know, this can include, troll, dwarf, gnome, and orc. I don't make the rules here unfortunately, not all Fae can fly, but a lot of them glimmer. In fact, they are a listed as European Protected Species in the garden Habitus model. But you know, that's the thing with the thing. They are universal tricksters that can play pranks on people, kidnap anyone, kidnap women for thier milk, force people to work in the fairy mounds. Their magic is so strong, they can look like anything and anyone. Mostly it is all a the long post,

Should have described the eyes as amber. I’m a shorty, I’m very fast when I am looking through sales racks.

As a Scandinavian myself the viking and name thing is extremely noticeable. They always pick the international Scandinavian names that also exists in English for the main characters.

Also I know how much people love six of crows but I will never be able to read that book with a straight face. Every time fjerda comes up I get so violently thrown out of the story over how half assed and nonsensical the language and culture is😂. I know it doesn’t need to be accurate to real life but she pulls so many surface level things and references that it becomes painful. Especially the language, good god to I want to scratch my eyes out every time I have to read it.

I feel the name rant lmao I love the fantasy names that are just normal names but just spelled funny to make it look more foreign. They remind me of the parents that give their child a generic ass name but then spell it weird because they think it's more original somehow.

I have an extremely long text rant to a friend (who doesn't even read) about my frustration with how "fae" are currently written (they're just elves. they're just stripped down, mean elves). So glad to finally see someone else be frustrated about this!

I have done a very clever chosen one trope in my stories. A person can get a title by doing absolutely anything good, which means they have to take on a quest. However, a clever part is, they can either take something for it to get rid of it, or pass it onto someone else. The thing is more of a virus than anything else, and it is easily spreadable. The situation can be like 'tag, your it'' type of thing. Someone ends up with it, and they can just pass it on to someone else and it just gets repeated.

I totally agree with you on the Norse/Viking name thing and another thing I hate that's kind of connected to this is when the MMC is described as a Viking or looking like a Norse or Greek god. I swear I've seen it several times in books where the male character is Scandinavian that he will be described as either a Viking or looking like a Norse god. It drives me bananas because all I can think is what the heck does the first one mean because the first one is a occupation and the second one varies because not all the gods are pretty and perfect like the Greek gods are supposed to be I guess. If he has no scars or disabilities then he isn't really like a Norse god. Never mind when it's the Greek gods because that is hubris and Heaven knows they'd like to smack your stupid face for daring to say that

Nah, small and slow in comparison to the people having longer legs and a will to outrun or outwalk me, even if I'm quite a fast walker. The moment a fit person with longer legs wants to catch me? They do. And men in these stories are usually especially fit. 😂 Your argument checks out, or I'm just an outlier. P.S.: these descriptions almost sound demeaning to me, or remind me of some women who put a lot of of emphasis on their short height for mating purposes. 😂

One tall person step is almost 2 my short ass steps. So ya I guess I move faster cause I have to in order to keep up. That doesn't mean I'm getting somewhere faster than you just means I have to move my legs more. Also Im not dainty I'm short and stumpy, more hobbit like.

One thing that kept giving me the ick was in A Fate Inked in Blood the FMC was named Freya and the MMC kept being compared to Baldur, in the myth Baldur is the pretty boy but he's Freya's son (vom).
It would be fine if it was something like Skaði and Baldur or Freya and Surtr but don't make it gross.

I kinda like names that aren't real names but sound like they could be like in Joe Abercrombie's or GRRM's books. Peter V Brett's Demon Cycle uses names but spells them slightly different.
I read a series that had fae but they were more than one kind of creature and definitely not hot humans or elves, they were monsters. It certainly wasn't a romantasy series.
The Book of the Ancestor and the Book of the Ice trilogies by Mark Lawrence feature an inuit type people. Not specifically northern because the world has a dying sun and all but the equator of the planet is covered in ice. So northern AND southern

I'm Scandinavian and I'm over the depiction of vikings in most media. Either they get it all wrong, or they play into current-day white supremacist ideas, often both at the same time.

This is also why I agree with you about the viking name thing. Oh, the hot guy is called Erik and the hot girl is called Astrid/Sigrid/Ingrid? No! They're called Ingulv and Ragnhild or some such. Even worse when they name normal human characters after Norse gods. We started that stuff in the late 1700s or so. If you wanted to name a kid after a god before that, you needed to combine it with something else (à la Torsten=Thor's stone). And don't get me started on modern names (Tindra, Smilla etc.) on supposedly viking characters, or even worse, just grabbing random words that aren't used as names at all.

Tbh, it sounds like the bigger issue is your selection in books, because I'm a regular reader and don't really hit any of these trends.

This was an interesting video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I really didn't think about it but I really don't like the names that I can't pronounce. I want John, Debbie, Julie, Bob kind of names. LoL! You had me laughing at the tiny girl. I'm small (5 foot) and I totally agree with what you said.

Edward is the fastest one lol. it's stated when he gets to the ballet studio and James says it's because you're faster than the others but not stronger.
