6:48 basically, if any player receives a pass on the other half of the pitch (the rival's half), there has to be an opponent who is located between that player and the goal line (this also applies if the attacker is on the same line as the defender but has any part of his body except arms and hand in offside position, if both, attacker and defender are on exactly the same line it's not offside). In that moment of the video, Messi was offside, because there are no defenders between him and the goal line, but he didn't participate, he didn't touch the ball nor changed its trajectory, so it's not considered offside. Also, there are no offside when the pass comes from a rival or the pass comes from a goal kick, corner kick or throw in.

You are offside if you are standing closer to the oppositions goal than all of their outfield players when the ball is passed to you. In the clip that made you mention it, at 6:36 when the ball is passed to Messi you can see that he is closer to the opposition goal than any of the oppositions defenders, which means he is offside. If he had of touched the ball it would have been a free kick for the other team, but he didn't touch the ball so it's okay.

For example. If the furthers back defender is near the middle of the pitch, and you stand with the opposition goal keeper, you would be offside if the ball was passed to you.
