Defensive highlights of the legendary former undisputed Heavyweight champion. A different look at The Manassa Mauler!

Jack Dempsey - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927, and reigned as the world Heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. A cultural icon of the 1920s, Dempsey's aggressive fighting style and exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million-dollar gate, and pioneered the live broadcast of sporting events in general, and boxing matches in particular. Dempsey is ranked sixth on The Ring magazine's list of all-time heavyweights and fourth among its Top 100 Greatest Punchers, while in 1950 the Associated Press voted him as the greatest fighter of the past 50 years. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Just to clarify I do know Dempsey wasn't a defensive genius but I thought it was interesting to see someone effectively rolling and slipping even as far back as 1919 in his fight with Jess Willard. Dempsey truly was amazing!

With all due respect, Dempsey was a defensive genius. Read his book. He invented bobbing and weaving.

i think dempsey revolutionised boxing in many respects, that perpetual bobbing and weaving was pretty unique back then, i also love how he winds up square and then weaves back into orthodox position, if look close you can using that lead shoulder shell, a la mayweather/toney ..great stuff !

"Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching & Aggressive Defense"
pick it up people, seriously, baring a few minor modern adjustments it is one of the best books on boxing techniques and ideas.

i would sell a kidney to get in a time machine and somehow bring a prime dempsey and prime sonny liston to fight each other.

Dempsey was so electrifying, new, & exciting. Bobbing, weaving, slipping, &, knocking people out, they thought he didn't know how to box. Thought he was doing something illegal it looked do differently than the past gentleman style of boxing. Their is a reason he still holds crowd attendance records.

Definately an innovator with the low crouching Bob and weaving style that influenced many to come.

I've watched this at least a dozen times, since it was posted. I enjoy it just as much today as the first time I watched it.

Great video. Great music. What Dempsey had goes beyond boxing. A lot of the greats had it. Call it style, looks, balance, grace of movement, or uniqueness...they were cool to watch. Yes even a fighter like Rocky Marciano had it. It's really all those things I guess. All those things in one package.
