Indians are extremely extremely smart but there are issues with leadership. I hope they improve and more people in India will get great opportunities

Sam Altman offered words of encouragement for those that didn't get it. He said it's our job to tell you it's hopeless to try ( because why would he encourage competition) but you should try it anyways ( encouraging us to do the difficult even tho the odds are stacked against us )

I don't think he was trying to be condescending towards Indian engineers and scientists, or even entrepreneurs. He just said that it was hopeless to compete with OpenAi, and there seemed to be an element of humor in it.

Later he clarified he meant hopeless with 10 million USD. He recognises the talent of Indian Engineers & Scientists. It's just that the kind of Capital investment required is insane.

He said it's hopeless with 10million, not hopeless for india.

The truth is bitter. No innovation out of India in the near and coming future. Maybe 40 years from now.

The reason why he told "hopeless" for building foundational models is cuz, it requires a hell lot of money to build powerful foundational models and OpenAI is able to do it cuz its funded completely by Microsoft. Indians dont have a vibrant investor to do that. We have to get out of the "70 hours work week" Concept wala mindset to achieve great innovations as a growing superpower.

He is correct, because our edu system make us skilled Workers, Managers or CEOs.
It's matter of mindset by root via edu system.

The questioner was basically asking him how can he compete with Open AI, obviously Sam isn't going to help a rival. Indians have a habbit of copying from others.

My job to tell you it's hopeless, your job to prove me wrong. How is that anything other than OPEN?

AI models need lots of money only rich companies can afford. India is a poor country with 2-3 such companies who can burn that much money doing tons of pocs then come to an mvp.

I think India should not compete for AI at this moment, we are far behind. Just like the internet, we should focus on inventing a tech that has.never been done before. Something that will make AI look like a baby.

He didn't say it's hopeless for Indians. He just wanted to position his company as the best, something that cannot be competed with. Didn't feel he was targeting india in that sense.
