Do anamorphic lenses make a difference to cinematography? Do they help the story in unique ways? Yes, of course. In this video I show you a simple way anamorphic lenses made John Carpenter's Halloween scarier.

Wow. This is the first video on anamorphic that goes beyond fancy lens flares and gets to storytelling aspects. Thank you for that!

You are a fountain of wisdom. I've 20 years in the business and yet here you are with a wealth of additional knowledge to push me to the next level. Plus you put it into such an understandable narrative. Thank you. I would love to see what you have filmed.

It isn't a proper movie experience without anamorphic. This is a great video. love it.

What an excellent expose on this film. Halloween is such an inspiration to filmmaking. What they were able to accomplish on a shoe string budget is amazing. Carpenter didn't compromise on the cameras and film developing. The cinematography and lighting stands up to (and mostly surpasses) any film made today.

This is one of the subscriptions that never disappoint, no, the exact opposite. You're a great creator!

And hoooow frickin good does Halloween look almost half a century later!? Is this a 4K remastered version? This really gives low budget a bad name. xD

I’m a long time subscriber, but i just hit the bell for both you and Mikey! I also LOVE how you choose Halloween on a lot of filmmaking topics. I still watch it every year, at least every fall. Did you ever compared the DVD and Bluray version? It’s funny how much shadows have been revealed in the remastered Bluray version. You can even see the camera operator’s shadow in a particular shot (something that was hidden before remastering)

I agree with the things you've said and I think it was really clever of you to point out the reasons how anamorphic made Halloween scarier. I'm not entirely sold on Carpenter purposely choosing anamorphic to make it scarier, I'd say you nailed one of the first reason to show the emptiness of the environment better, but I think the main surface level reason is that they both love the look. Dean Cundey the DP of the film states Halloween was the 6th film that he shot Anamorphic with, and this is early on in his career. Then Carpenter and him pretty much shoot their films anamorphic from then on no matter the genre. I am definitely not trashing the points you made in the video because I agree that anamorphic enhances the horror, but at the same time I feel like this is one of those cases where legendary filmmakers made the right choice without really realizing the impact.

Nice video overall sir, however, anamorphic was developed to create a wider aspect ratio for a larger field of view back before WWI, later the patent was purchased by the studio system in the 50's to compete with the advent of television and bring movie goers back to the theaters. Anamorphic utilized more of the 35mm film by squeezing the image thus not wasting more of the celluloid. It actually doesn't have anything to do with the distortion of spherical wide angle lenses.

Hello, I was just wondering, how has the SCG TRIPOD been holding up? It's been close to a year since you got it right?

I've heard that Roger Dealings filmed Fargo with spherical lenses and then cropped the image so it would have the wide aspect ratio of an anamorphic lense. Is there a disadvantage to shooting something that way?

Great content as always! How do you feel about the conversation that the taller 16:9 is best for showing more because it adds height? It's interesting because saying the wider aspect rations like 2.35:1 add width is almost the same argument. Neither side sees their favorite ratio as subtracting.

So at 0:34 you say that anamorphic lenses can get you a larger field of view without the typical distortion of a wide angle lens, yet at 4:52 you suggest that the kind of barrel distortion shown in the movie couldn't be achieved with a spherical lens, it doesn't really add up, could you please clarify these statements?
