It's time for Mabel to fly the nest, Paul is struggling.
Season 8 Episode 1 ‘The Kid Leaves’. Eighteen years after their daughter Mabel’s birth, Paul and Jamie Buchman are packing her up to move five blocks away to her dorm at NYU. As Jamie obsesses over making sure that Mabel has everything from her phone charger to condoms, Paul tries to get his daughter to read the emotional poem he wrote to mark the occasion. After settling into her dorm, Mabel is summoned to orientation, leaving Jamie and Paul to start their life as empty-nesters.\n\nAs Paul reminds Jamie how much he’s been looking forward to this day, their friends Mark and Tonya stop by with bags of food to help them cope. While Tonya notes that many of her therapy clients have been broken when their kids left for college, Jamie insists that she’s fine. But when she discovers that Mabel didn’t make her bed before she left, she takes it as an insult.\n\nUnable to put the messy bed behind her, Jamie heads to the dorm to tell Mabel to come home and make it. Refusing, Mabel says Jamie can rid of the bed if it’s a problem. Once Jamie angrily returns home, Paul goes to school to ask Mabel to make things right. However, after picking something up from his brother Ira’s new restaurant to sooth Jamie’s frazzled nerves, Paul arrives to find Mabel’s bed in pieces outside their door. Finally, after heading back to NYU to make amends with Mabel, Jamie heads to the restaurant, where Ira prepares a special dish to help her and Paul launch the next phase in their lives.
