E155 | The Morality of the Left and Right | Peter Hitchens, Sophie Walker, Chris Bryant

The left has traditionally seen itself as progressive, with history and morality on its side. But is history on anyone's side? And as for morality, don't all politicians think they're in the right? Should the left then give up its claim to the moral high ground and argue for policies on pragmatic grounds alone? Or would this be to undermine its very core and meaning? Leader of the Women's Equality Party Sophie Walker, outspoken journalist Peter Hitchens and Labour MP and former vicar Chris Bryant debate left, right and wrong.

The political class, the academie, the civil service and the legal system are in the hands of liberals and not leftists as Hitchens puts it. This is a common misconception amongst conservatives.

No resource is infinite -- not even charity or solicitude. That, then, Ms. Walker has dedicated herself to a narrow theme of activism (specifically, the class of issues relating to gender inequality (and in part to ethnic inequality)) is understandable. Focus is often necessary for progress to be made. However, in my opinion at least, Ms. Walker might better serve her cause if she acknowledged her delimited viewpoint -- that is, by communicating, explicitly or even just in tone, that she wants to better the world, as most other altruists do, by adding her small part to the efforts of others, her part being women's advocacy. Our world will never be perfect; it will always be awash in problems; and although Ms. Walker may rate various issues differently from other people, those other issues shouldn't be fully dismissed (e.g., 8:29, 8:57)
