When the lockdown went in place I didn't even bother with teaching my daughter common core math, I taught her old school math with multiplication table. She did so much better and even gave her friends the chart.

My mother told me a long time ago that I better be able to do math in my head because there's not always gonna be a calculator around. I work with money everyday and I rarely look at my screen to to check for the right change and I'm one of the few that can count change back. Gen X and proud!!!

It's as if they don't want kids to actually learn anything in schools these days

From what I've seen schools today are teaching kids how to pass a test as opposed to teaching them how survive after high school.

I took bookkeeping and typing in high school and those classes did me more good in life than algebra, trigonometry, etc. Today's kids don't even know how to count change back without the aid of a display on the cash register or calculator.

Never ask a GenZ kid to do math. You'll get 1+1= potato.

They think we're in the 20th century...yup! My old math ass got hit up side the head by a homeschooled 14 year old with that one recently!! Well, the year IS 2024...why not be the 20th century?? 🤔

Yeah... 'Mornin', all...

Common core math is ridiculous! When I help my 11 year old son, I show him the easy way. And told his teacher if the answer is correct, she better not take points off for him doing it the normal, easier way. 😅

Not only does "common core" have boxes for addition... But there boxes and diagonal lines for multiplication. Its called "lattice multiplication" by them. I just called it stupid boxy line crap. My kiddos asked me about me doing lattice in school and I told them "um we didn't, I never knew there was such a thing until I saw y'all doing it"

If you haven't heard of it or seen it, just look into "lattice multiplication" - if anything, it'll help you understand why they start drawing when faced with something like 256 x 454... I still do the "old" way (which I've been constantly informed is incorrect and dumb - gotta love 15 & 10 yr olds) ... I'm over here dropping zeros and taking half a page - but at least my answer is correct

Omg! True story… our youngest struggled w/ math. Me being an accountant & also history of creating algebra & pre-algebra mathematics software programs for inner city schools some odd number of years ago…wanted to help her. She kept telling me I was doing it wrong. I was like when did math change? And solving the problems should be solved in this order of operation… Correct? Not according to the way her teacher was teaching it. I’ll just say that it took tutoring & 2 more years than usual to graduate high school; she couldn’t understand this teaching method; normal IQ. Not to mention the fact they weren’t allowed to take textbooks home due to shortages; had to share w/ other classrooms. Unbelievable! Get what you pay for… That’s what happens when you live in a state w/one of the worst education systems & low teacher pay…🤦‍♀️

My brother and I taught my niece to do multiplication the way we were taught. She graduated this year near the top of her class . . . and earned a certification in welding to boot.

I subbed in a school one day and showed the kids how to do old math on the board like a teacher. The light bulbs 💡 that went off in the room were amazing!

I was great at math as a kid. Even in the advanced course.

Since seeing this, I have taken it upon myself to try and understand "new" math and common core.

So far, Google doesn't know either. It has a definition and some photos, but getting an intelligent breakdown of how to use it has yielded no results.

Every example I have seen of each of these new methods doesn't logically lead to the correct answers to the problems asked. Instead, it seems they make it far more complicated than it needs to, and the answer will always be wrong.

I've spoken to a couple of teachers I know about what I am doing, and they laughed at me, started walking away and said good luck. I felt seen. 😂
