The USA is going to learn the hard way that ignorance doesn’t equal success.

Be assured that Canada is moving forward with the potential legislation to drop day one with similar 25% tariffs on the US. America, get ready to bail out your car companies again. The only winner is the government tax collectors. Life will get expensive for both citizens. If the US exempts oil, Canada should apply an export tariff to compensate for the financial damage, like the US bailed out the farmers the last time he created this mess.

Economy shock for Canadians too. What a terrible way to treat our long time friends!

When a simpleton like me understands the implications of "tariffs", so can everyone else. This is a no-brainer.

Tariffs---> inflation.
Retaliatory tariffs---> low demand--->job layoffs

As a disable vet it's become obvious to me over the years that the GOP and most Americans don't care about vets beyond the occasional "thank you for your service"

The de-industrialization started in 1981 with Reagan. We lost 5 million manufacturing jobs during Reagan because of Reagan. The second massive deindustrialization was during G. W. Bush with an additional loss of another 5 million jobs due to G. W. Bush.

It would be nice if we could train people to repair consumer goods instead of filling up landfills with broken stuff.

Michael.
Correction: It started with Reagan.

What is critical to understand is that Trudeau has spent the last two years visiting businesses and economic stakeholders in the Red States. Canada took this approach the last time Trump imposed tariffs, and it was successful. Despite Trump's millions in subsidies to farmers, Trump withdrew the tariffs, and trade returned to its former glory. Mexico is another can of fish. Anticipating a Trump Presidency, consider how much Trudeau's plan has been operational for the last two years. Great strategy.

"The bigger question is this: How far will Trump go as president to enrich himself at the expense of the poor, the elderly, and single mothers? If the affairs of Trump University are any indication, then Trump has proven himself to be quite comfortable exploiting the hopes, dreams, and fears of vulnerable Americans." Trump University: A Look at an Enduring Education Scandal "As the long-standing legal case on Trump University comes to a close, this brief looks at new evidence and insights on Trump and his hallmark educational initiative." I just want to mention to somebody aware of reality. Canada owns the electric company that services my county (I live in the US) The 25% tariff would wipe us electricity is already through the roof. When it is stated we won't trade with Canada will we lose electricity???? There is major manufacturing that would be impacted as well.

I notice the Mexican PM is not panicking. She knows Trump is full of it.

American’s Need to understand, even if manufacturing increases in America, and mark my word, we need to, we need to rebuild factories, train people and then, most importantly, PAY OUR FELLOW AMERICANS A FAIR AND LIFE SUSTAINING SALARY. The bottom line on this is American becomes more self sufficient, however the price of goods will increase by a minimum of $10 and item MORE than what we pay coming from China, Mexico. This increase is required to cover a living wage for fellow Americans
