why, sometimes, the push pull comand is limited? (it show me this: "offset limted to 0.00")

Once you push pull a door out and it’s gone, how do you go back and add the door later?

Can you make a video about using the Push-Pull tool on text?  I've read that it needs to be 3D text with the extruded box checked but I still can't get it to work for me.
