240,000 nanoplastics in a water bottle!? 🤢 #plastic #plasticpollution

a new study found that a 1-liter bottle of water contains up to 240,000 nanoplastics 🤢 these nanoplastics are so tiny — 1,000th the width of a human hair — that they can migrate through digestive tissues into the bloodstream, distributing harmful synthetic chemicals throughout the body. some studies have shown that microplastics in the human body can lead to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and fertility issues.

and if you’ve followed me for a while, you know that there is no shaming here, and that the responsibility should fall 100% on the plastic manufactures (petrochemical companies) who continue to create this toxic material that’s both harmful to people & planet. this is extremely unjust, considering the water of as many as 26 million Americans is contaminated, and could be reliant on bottled water.

for the apathetic people who aren’t moved by the news of plastic pollution choking our waterways and poisoning communities: if you’re not going to do it for others, do it for yourself.

it starts with awareness, but can’t stop there. Here are three things you can do right now to advocate for a plastic-free future:

✍️ Sign petitions and action alerts created by environmental organizations like @breakfreefromplastic @PlasticPollutes @surfrider

📣 contact your local mayor, city council, and state representative, asking for stronger policies on single-use plastics

🔒Hold polluters accountable by supporting the work of RISE St. James & @EarthjusticeOrg who expose these massive petrochemical companies and are taking them to court.

I'm always baffled that people still drink out of plastic water bottles... and even refill them 🤯

And usually the water being brought to you. Put in your little steel container comes out of plastic pipe.

Micro plastics are concerning but for "archeologists" to find plastic in archeological sites makes me believe micro plastics have always been around since oil has been alway around and we are just now discovering it
