This video explaining the importance of arm weight is probably the most informative and important video about successful piano playing anywhere on the Net. This guy, Craig, deserves International recognition just for this video alone. I understand the use of arm weight so I know what he's talking about and he really knows what he's talking about. He's also right about most prodigies not understanding that many or most people are not born knowing how to use arm weight when they play the piano. The great thing is that anybody can be taught how to use arm weight which will solve about 90 % of the problems people have with playing the piano. If you know people who are having problems with playing the piano do them a big favor and tell them about this video. Arm weight is the absolute key to being able to play the piano easily.

When the arm stays still as the finger moves, that shows too much weight, not too little. The arm should be able to respond upwards when fingers move, not just sit heavily on the finger. To fail to respond to what is an upward reaction is a definitive sign of excessive downforce from the arm and certainly not too little. Slumping the weight down is as bad as being unresponsive. It's by being lighter that the arm can start to actually respond to the fingers.

Nicely explained! Usually one tends to think of arm weight as a mechanism to control dynamics, like how much to let gravity do, and how much gravity to hold up. But that is a totally different story. It is about getting used to feel the bottom of the key as a resting position. A complete shift of philosophy. Of course, I kind of had discovered this, after about 2-3 years into piano playing; yet today, 6 years into playing, I tried your tip and I found it a useful sensation to focus on, especially for the left hand. I had never seen this explained so much to the point. Thank you!

The things you said throughout this video resonates so much with what my friends and I are striving in terms of learning what is arm weight and trying to teach what is arm weight. THANK YOU.

I'm an adult student and my previous teacher did absolutely nothing for my technique. My current teacher does emphasize on technique and arm weight and relaxation, but she lacks the ability to articulate and explain the intricate mechanisms of how it should be done.

Currently I'm still experimenting alot with what is the most optimal way of playing for me as I find that my Right Hand harbours alot of tension and usually after a practice session, the part of my wrist which is near my fourth and pinky finger is always quite tense and sore. This has been an issue for quite some time and I'm still struggling to find a solution. But thanks to your videos, I feel like at least I'm on the right track and hopefully I stumble across something in your videos that spark that light bulb in my head someday!

Hi Craig, thanks for the insight! Would it work for faster passage too?

Since I was born able to play person here; are you just explaining the way it feels to apply the right pressure / weight distribution technique for proper transposition? Is that why your referenced people who’d always had it figured out, cuz it seems like you’re either describing something actually quite difficult, such as when I first heard “Imagine your fingers begin atop your shoulder” — or something totally intuitive... anyway, it’s hard to tell. I will try to implement this advice, to utilize the falling of the weight of my arm for each key — I’m sure I must do this already, not at a piano to try rn unfortunately..but p sure I do — anyway solid advice subbed

Hi, I am start doing the exercise as a part of the daily practice. If i put the hand down on the keybord to let them "rest" on the keys, they immediately sink in..I found myself putting a little muscle in the arm so they don't sink in..what is your point of view to handle this. My goal is to play relax 😉

One only has to look at recordings of Hofmann, to see how it is done.

I'm very glad to have found your channel! But I have a slight problem when I try this technique - I feel like my fingers are too weak when I put all my arm weight on them and my joints get tired. Maybe my hands are collapsing? Is there something I can do about this?

I didn’t realize how bad my technique was until my hand hurt when I was playing. Thanks this channel is lefendwryb
