What Is Happening to Betelgeuse? Stellar Evolution

Before we attempt to get to the bottom of what was taking place, it’s a good idea to be aware of what Betelgeuse is like. This object falls into the category of red supergiants and is in the final stage of its life cycle, according to today’s theory of stellar evolution. With its luminosity and radius constantly changing, its outer layers are highly unstable. The star regularly emits millions of tons of scorching gas into space, and this forms gargantuan prominences. As they cool off, they contribute to the gas nebula surrounding Betelgeuse.

Hi there, everyone! What do you say?

If you are a fan of our videos, feel free to support our project here:

If we do find Betelgeuse going supernova in present day, then at that point we will know that 650-750 years ago the star went supernova. Such an interesting subject indeed 👍🏻

Man, I love astronomy. Anything and everything space related is fascinating to me. If only we as a species were able to venture out and explore more of this universe. I hope I'm alive to see something great

Nice video! One correction though: the thermonuclear reaction does not happen in all the star's volume. Only near the center. Same is with the Sun. There is less pressure and temperature in the outer layers to support the reaction.

It's interesting to see a video on Betelgeuse, because the other day I was coming home with my dad and I saw the constellation Orion and I thought the star looked a little weird. I remember being able to find it easily as a child because of how red it was, but when I saw it now its more silvery and was flickering wildly. It might have been because it was still low on the horizon, but...

It may have already novaed! We wouldn't know it until hundreds of years later! I wonder what the constellation stars really look like NOW. Do they still make the same pictures now in real time? Is there a star simulation software that would show that? 🤔

Us: “It’s so beautiful to see that star explode!”
Around that star: everything has just been destroyed in a cosmic blast. Destruction. Death. Annihilation.

I have watched Betelgeuse, or more accurately the Orion Constellation since I was a kid in the 50s for years. I retired and bought a couple of telescopes and even I noticed its brilliance went up and down. The last couple of years My grandchildren noticed the Orion Constellation had changed.

That was an incredible watch. I'll surely be rewatching this a hundred times.

The quality of these videos is.. un-be-liev-able. For real, this is superb, I have no words.

Loved this great video, however, anyone else kind of feel sad that we didn't get the "KOSMO!" at the beginning?

From where you get these crazy gorgeous and ethereal CGI footages? Do you make them by yourself? [DiowE]

Imagine looking up at it one night and seeing the moment it went supernova.

It truly is fascinating to think we're seeing stars hundreds of years in the past

Stars have to be 3x the mass of our sun to create a black hole. Betelgeuse is 20x the mass of our sun, so it has the potential to create black hole. If it did, it would be the closest black hole to earth.

i, ve no idea where you get your CGI from but i do very much appreciate them . they add no end to the wonders your describing. it all makes me feel very very small
