Soldiers do wear the name on the helmet. But it's on a small embroidered patch sewn onto the elastic band.

A rare scene in cinema; when Star 4-1 lands at the first crash site, the pilot gets out and runs to the wounded Delta operators. That pilot is CW5 Keith Jones, and he's reenacting the scene that earned him a Silver Star Medal.

I was in the Army long before they came up with names on the back of your head gear. That was great because if a new LT was trying to get your attention you could just pretend you didn't hear him.

The soldier who went deaf cuz he had the machine gun rifle barrel on his shoulder for a little while while his partner did the shooting.
He was the man.
Deaf as fuck, still fighting.
EDIT: This is my favorite war movie of all time. An underrated classic

I served with Matt Eversmann. He might actually have been the coolest dude in the Army.

actually those bands on their helmets (forget the name of the band itself), had their last name, blood type and I believe their edipi (military id number) and rank. This is so if shit happens and all that's found is the helmet, the service member could be identified. Similarly it was and still is common place to fix your second dog tag inside the laces of your left boot for the same reason, and on all (at least marine corps combat utility uniforms) cammie trousers, on the right side above the left rear pocket the name plate (a tab with the last name) of the service member was sewn into the uniform. I'm a marine, so trust me, I remember a decent amount of small details about our uniforms.

Sir Ridley was thinking like a producer or a CEO of the movie company . They would more than likely complain that they can't tell the difference between characters .

Also if watch the scene where there’re a few delta members who put blood types on their boots or knee pads was an actual thing, reason begin if one of them was critically wounded and brought in the military medical center the doctor can figure out their blood type and give or start a blood transfusion if needed and doctors will grab anybody from the team who has the same blood type or if it’s comparable with any.
Ex-special forces vets have told me how well the doctors were at the bases if they were mortally wounded, they have told me is that no matter the conditions you are in if you had a pulse they are 90% sure they can patch you up and you’ll be walking again.
On the Shaw Ryan show there was a Navy SEAL who was in Afghanistan I think and it was pitch dark outside and night vision was useless and they literally couldn’t see their hands. The Navy SEAL name is Jason Redman and was on that mission with DJ Shipley, Jason was shot in the face and was shot down so hard they all thought he was KIA cause how hard he fell when he was shot. Once they got Jason back at base by a helio MedEVAC docotrs there went to see if he had a pulse and he did. It was an interesting story Jason said, if you have the time to sit and listen to Jason by all means do it this guy is still walking till this day. He even explained how and why he’s still walking

Everyone looks the same in uniform more or less but you’d be amazed how easily you can identify someone after serving with them for awhile. I can instantly identify anyone in my platoon at night, almost no light, just by their gait, and a semblance of silhouette.

Helped to distinguish the characters, and I never even noticed it until now

During this time, we did have our names on our helmet bands, not in huge scribble letters though.

In Iraq in 2004 our unit wouldn’t let us write anything on our helmets, some of us once went with another unit and they made us write last name and blood type (on the back). No one was sewing on name tapes at that time.

Ridley does like to bend the truth, but does make epic movies.

I'm ex Army, and we DID have our names on our helmets on those head bands that went around the helmet.

We always went sterile into operations. We knew one another so well. We could determine one another at night just by sound or shape.

Can’t even count how many times I’ve seen this movie, and never once noticed their names written on their helmets.

Was watching a reaction video a while back, one of the actors from the movie commented on why Ridley Scott had the soldiers names on the helmets, it comes down to editing, so the movies editing crew could identify and keep track if the characters... makes sense when. You consider they all look similar...
