Actress Maggie Smith, known for ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Downton Abbey’ roles, dies at 89

Maggie Smith, the masterful, scene-stealing actor who won an Oscar for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969 and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died Friday. She was 89.

I saw Maggie Smith walked out of Pickwick's 3rd floor bookstore in the 1960s filled with scripts. There she was, wearing a paisley scraf wrapped around her head. I was there just standing there on the sidewalk when she got onto a car. I think it was 1968. I was 17. I'm Cynthia Taylor. I was there. 👋
