I met Maggie Smith by accident one afternoon in 1977 while purchasing tickets for Julius Caesar, in which she played, at the Shakespeare Festival Theater in Stratford, Ontario. I absently left my sunglasses at the box office counter and was on my way out and halfway down the large lobby when the theater doors burst open with Maggie leading an entourage of young women to the same ticket counter. The person behind the counter must have mentioned that I had forgotten to pickup my glasses and rather than shouting across the room Maggie quickly snapped them up and walked the length of the hall to hand them to me. It was only then that I recognized her, and graciously thanked her, thinking she could have at the most just handed them to one of her followers to do that. A small effort on Maggie’s part that made me a lifelong fan.

I'm so sad 😞 Nobody could of played Professor McGonagall any better!

Let's not forget she played Wendy Darling in Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.

I’m so grateful they included a proper dying scene at the end of Downton Abbey: A New Era, so that she could bow out in the most splendid dramatic and elegant fashion!

You don't even have to be a fan to understand she was a legend.

Saddens my heart! She just can’t not be here like Betty White! Such an outstanding actress and forever the matriarch of Downton Abbey!

I remember her first as a Shakesperian actress. But I loved her as the matron in Downton Abby.

RIP Dame Maggie Smith.💔🙏🏻💐
You were a true legend, one of the finest actors I've ever known. Harry Potter series will always be closest to my heart, and you were an integral part it. And Dowager Countess's one liners in Downtown Abbey changed my whole perspective about life. You'll be sorely missed. Love from India.😊❣️
