Does this mean I can't buy a call option and then sell it later for a profit without worrying about assignment? Meaning the last person to sell the contract has the obligation to sell shares at the strike price to the new buyer of the option?

a bit confused on what you said here. First you said if you are buying calls or puts you are expecting the market (or equity) to move in the money, and selling options will always be betting on the market moving out of the money. Then you say that when you buy a put you are expecting the market/equity to move below the strike price (ootm) and when you sell a put you are expecting the market/equity to move above the strike price (itm). The second statement seems to be the polar opposite of the first statement you made.
