Welcome to Sporty's new Advanced Pilot Skills Series, hosted by Spencer Suderman. Spencer is an airshow pilot, flight instructor and two-time Guinness World Record breaker for most inverted flat spins… 98 turns from 24,000 feet!

This series will show you how to have more fun flying general aviation airplanes while improving your airmanship using the skills you already have and some novel techniques.

Episode 5: "We're gonna do so much slipping, you'll forget how to fly straight." Spencer shows what happens if you stall in a slip - do you instantly spin? He also demonstrates a slip on final, showing how much altitude you can lose with this maneuver.

I don't see this course yet on the web page in the link. This is very helpful. Your videos make it seem easy and will be good confidence builders for pilots. I had a Saratoga II turbocharged and was flying at 17, 000' when the oil temperature redlined. I was in busy DC airspace, so the controller vectored me to a remote airport. I pulled the throttle back to cool off the engine. When I got to the airport, I was very high. I had to assume that I couldn't use the engine and had to make this landing, so I did a forward slip (which I had practiced a lot). It got me down safely. All pilots should be well trained and comfortable with this.

Spencer, really appreciate this video series. While it’s not an inverted flat spin😀, us CFIs are really benefiting from your aviation experience to bring tips and techniques to our learners. Especially loved the use of trim wheel on engine out. Looking forward to more!

some caution every A/C reacts differently in a slipped stall. first C-172 are very docile and are hard to even spin so yeah not a big deal but stall slip say a C-150 and even though it still not that big a deal the A/C will react a bit more pronounce and if you don't react appropriately the A/C will enter a spin very easily. Ask me how I know LOL!

Add a glider rating. Not only is it a lot of fun, it will greatly improve your stick and rudder skills and you will get lots of practice making slipping approaches.

Looks like you are slipping with flaps. I was taught never slip a Cessna with flaps - in fact it is in some of the POH that I’ve seen, but no satisfactory reason is given as to why not. Some say it can cause a tail stall, but I have a feeling that might be an urban myth. What’s your take on this?

Make sure not to confuse with skidding, which is bad.

Unless I don't have the engine anymore, I would rather go around before thinking that I would be ok if I landed long!
