Good explanation of the 2 kinds of slips. I have been a current and active CFI for the past 52 years. I write articles for both the Cessna and Piper Owner Magazines and one of them was entitled “The Forward Slip… the Forgotten Maneuver that can Save Your Life”. In it I tell pilots that being proficient with the forwards slip can save their life during a forced landing when you find yourself too high to make your emergency landing field, or the airport if you fly the return maneuver. Well done! But be sure to tell your students that if they are too high during a normal cross wind landing, to choose to lower the upwind wing into the wind to lose altitude so that all the pilot has to do is decrease bank and apply the proper amount of rudder to be set up for the crosswind landing. One small point on your explanation is that aileron/ wing down is used to stop unwanted lateral drift and rudders are used to keep the fuselage aligned with the runways centerline. The names of the two types of slips is counterintuitive. The forward slip has the side of the fuselage cocked sideways to increase drag while the side slip has the fuselage is perfectly alight with the the direction of flight. Thanks for posting your video! I think your students are lucky to have you as their instructor.

I am currently working on my private and I've been following you since I started flying. your videos have really gave me a lot of information. I actually did a forward slip today.

Hey Jason!!! I learned the forward slip from your video and that made my PPL possible. I failed the first check ride because I was not taught the forward slip. Thanks for the help.

Love it as one of your Rusty Pilots Flying again.. I now own a 1946 Taylorcraft bc12d Conventional Gear, no Flaps...I am Loving the Slip ;)

Good job. you are appreciated and respected .. Post a comment clarifying about being able to slip for altitude or airspeed but not both at the same time. Explain what you mean by that and put in words of caution about spins and LOC on base to final with slips. Also say a few words about slipping with and without flaps and cover the importance of POH review as to whether a certain AC should ever slip with ANY flaps or never ... thanks

Hi, great video once again! Can you please do a video on side slips ??

My school practices a really tight circuit and glide approaches, and will often turn a short final at 850 feet, so we practice slips a lot.

Hi Jason, love your awesome show! Quick question - you say "you can slip for altitude or you can slip for airspeed but you can't do both". Do you mean "shouldn't" do both? This made me think because I was always taught to (forward) slip in order to decrease altitude without increasing airspeed (ie. a tool to use to solve the approaching too high problem). I never really thought about using a slip to decrease air speed, but that sounds like it should work - but when you say this, are you meaning maintain altitude with back elevator pressure while slipping? In such a case, I can see the speed decreasing (somewhat rapidly) while maintaining altitude. Theoretically, I agree, it sounds bad if you're slipping and losing *both* airspeed *and* altitude. I wondered about this when I was flying with Steve Wolf at KLEE in my Pitts 12 when he was teaching me. I asked him, "hey this feels funny, like if I slip too far, will I tip over?" He laughed and told me to try it (we were a mile high). So I did, and lo-and-behold, instead of a terrible stall-into-a-death-spin, The slip simply "slipped out", in other words, the low wing raised itself, and the high wing lowered itself. Now IF I had continued slowing and pulling on the stick, the airplane would have stalled normally, but I guess the point Steve was making was that in a slip, the airplane will give you a looong warning before stalling because the slip will "dissolve" before the stall, and the stall will occur on the high wing first, since the low wing is into the wind receiving plenty of lift.

Sorry for the long post, it's far easier to do it than explain it :) Anyhow, I'd love to hear your thoughts?

PS - Super great to meet you at AirVenture last month!

Very great thank you.  I got a question about headsets I always see you with both the bose and the Zulu, clearly you like both or you would have ditched one by now so for what reasons would you prefer one over the other.  for example witch is more comfortable for short and long periods of time witch has better anr and sound quality what one do you find has a better build quality.  Thanks again.

I always have the issue of Oklahoma crosswinds. When I use the forward slip I always feel way off center line. Low hour student pilot (soloing) I always chose the go around.

Jason, can you explain the reason for no flaps, I assume it's due to airspeed but I would assume if you are doing a normal approach to landing you would potentially have at least two notches of flaps in already. Great video as always my friend

I have my lesson for this in an hour! Thanks

I am confused. Do you point the nose of the airplane toward the relative wind or the wing? And can you do a forward slip on the opposite side of the relative wind?

Awesome...so is crabbing a type of forward slip or the same thing?

I noticed you did not use any flaps. Any recommendations for slipping when you have some flaps extended?

How does a forward slip affect the IAS since you could have a ram air affect on the static port or a vacuum affect on the port? How does the forward slip affect the the stall characteristic of the wing? with a crosswind is it better to point the nose of the aircraft into the wind or off the wind, or does it matter?
