Moldova’s frozen conflict with Russian-backed breakaway region Transnistria - BBC Newsnight

Russia’s foreign ministry has issued a not so veiled threat to the government of Moldova – accusing them of fostering an “off-the-scale degree of Russophobia” – encouraged by their Western allies.

Moldova has been in a “frozen conflict” for the last 30 years with a breakaway region called Transnistria, which is backed by the Russians who have 1,500 troops there.

Like many countries of the former soviet union, the tiny Eastern European nation has come under intense pressure from Moscow since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Our international correspondent Joe Inwood travelled to the country to see if this cold war could turn hot once more.

Dont forget. Russian intervention in Moldova was the reason why all these eastern European countries joined Nato. Especially the Baltic states and Estonia have enough Russians so Russia may lay claims on them again.

Russians living abroad in lost chunks of the USSR seem to want to bring Russia to them, instead of simply moving to Russia (which is so massive I’m sure there’s enough room for everyone without needing to add more territory.)

I visited Moldova a few years back and one thing that was very clear to me is that this is a country that is crying out for change. They've finally got a government that can make change happen and they've now achieved EU candidate status like Ukraine has, but what Putin has done in Ukraine has added fear and uncertainty back into the minds of Moldavians. I only wish and hope for the best for a country that has a lot to offer to the world!

Interesting how people still want to live there, but use Moldovan public services, and Moldovan education system. Why do they still want to be part of a region that doesn't serve them? I also hear that they use Moldovan electricity but don't pay for any of it.

4:53 funny this movie calls moldovans "nazis" so russians used this cheap propaganda trick in 1992 just like they do now in Ukraine

Why is Moldova paying public services for people that don't want to be Moldovan?
Continue with the education for the children, block the rest. And shut the borders for everything but humanitarian aid.

Problem solved. Transnitria implodes in a year or two.

It started with the annexation of Crimea in 2014, then the other Ukrainian eastern territories, and before Feb 24, Russia says no invasion but of course Russia did..there is no guarantee Moldova will not have similar fate like that of Ukraine.

A portion of a country that wants to be part of Russia when the area was never Russian territory in the first place is not likely to garner any support other than Russia. This 'little' war is part of a bigger problem where any type of insurrection in the world that acts like this should be addressed immediately and swiftly by the regional dominating power. You either decide in their favor or you crush the rebellion utterly and completely to stop even the notion of trouble in the future. The trouble started decades ago when Russia intentionally placed pro-Russian forces into various areas of Soviet control and there's no reason to keep those people favoring Russia in those spots, because doing so will cause trouble in the future.

I know the report states that there is no resolution in sight, but what solutions to this frozen conflict are or have been proposed?

How did Transnistria end up with a Russian population? Was it settled by Russians after Stalin took that area off Rumania or does it go back further than that?
