Wakefield is the smartest guy you’ve had on the show. Not afraid to say it like it is. China is forcing revolutionary change. Legacy auto have a few years to reinvent themselves or perish.

Great discussion. Mark Wakefield is clearly pragmatic about the direction of the auto industry. In the U.S. CEO's at Ford and GM are under so much pressure from large shareholders thnking about their next quarter rather than the next decade.

China is not a major oil producer, doesn't have an oil lobby and wishes to reduce it's dependence on imports.
US is a major oil producer, has a strong oil lobby who are resistant to change.
EVs are critical to one country's strategy and not critical to another's.

Too much focus on batteries, what? Of all the parts of an EV, the battery has the biggest impact. If a battery charges faster, consumers get excited. If a battery can get higher energy density, then less batteries can be used impacting production costs, charge times, and can improve rangevand handling. Battery tech and production plays a huge role on the EV industry. Government programs pushing development and production of batteries is great. Costs less than oil subsidies.

Mark is a smart dude that knows what will win in the next 5 years. It’s crazy to me that Mary Barra doesn’t seem to know!

Big Picture-

Can we all appreciate how Autoline has continually addressed the existential questions about the car industry?

I'm sure many us have worked with a company that preferred to "whistle past the graveyard". We sold off our units in a food franchise 20 years ago that failed to be realistic about our confusing market messaging.

I'm always impressed that John & Gary aren't simply Hometown Pollyanna, raving simply about V8 engines & chrome-laden American brodozers.

They are asking the tough questions that will make our industry stronger.

I'm in China and observing the car industry and the absolutely insane speed in which things are moving across all aspects of the EV car industry. China is just leaps ahead and the sooner legacy car manufacturers and governments accept this, the better it is for their own sake. In my opinion, don't try to build from scratch to catch up. It's too late. Establish joint ventures or buy stakes into the Chinese manufacturers or even share platforms and rebadge. The consumer doesn't care that the car they are buying is made in China as long as the quality is good. There are plenty of Chinese EV's that are on par or have better build quality than Mercedes or BMW.

This is why every time you have a delay from a legacy auto maker it is a step towards bankruptcy.

BYD, Geely, SAIC, and numerous others ventured into automobile industry as ICE car makers.
BYD has its roots making cellphone batteries, Geely began as a refrigerator maker. FAW, Changan, DF all have comprehensive EV lineups, there really is no excuse for legacy auto makers.

We had a contract with Ford in Michigan to automate their stamping and assembly plans and the culture of "US" vs "THEM" was alive and well It was very odd for someone from Silinco Valley to notice that Ford had a seperate Cafeteria for "Management'!! It was also shocking to see how primative the asset technology was at these plant due to Union's insistance to delay, defer and fight introduction of even a Contact Swith let alone computes.

My conclusion was that Unions have an outsize role is delaying progrses of US Auto OEMs. And that should NOT be the case.

The advantages that China has in manufacturing are through adopting and adapting good practices taught to them by Americans. The real challenge US manufacturers have is to learn from same Americans who taught the Chinese. Examples of Americans who get the lessons are Dr Deming, who’s student in the form of Sandy Munro is still around, and Dr Juran who taught quality management and lean manufacturing. A new mindset, from the top leadership down to the lowest level of workers, that is passionate about cost reduction is needed.

It's not just Stellantis that reach out to a Chinese EV brand...Toyota already announce their future PHEV will collaborate and use the BYD powertrain

We need our leaders to let this happen to force everyone else to make actually affordable vehicles again. Prices have gotten untouchable for almost everything.

I'm not going to beat around the bush. Protectionism doesn't work. What works is better products at better prices. All else means nothing to consumers and without consumers you have nothing. American car makers are doomed

Change requires a different way of thinking. The Chinese have learned to think more expansively and have learned the art of turning ideas into better products. But, as Mark observed, there are equally creative and motivated people within US organizations who, when put in the right culture and with visionary leadership, can perform to very high standards. Nevertheless, it cannot happen without systemic change, and that includes all aspects of the system, including Wall Street. In the end tariffs will buy legacy auto time, but it will not get at the core problem, they need wholesale change or they won´t survive.

This is the 3rd guy they have had on that has explained that legacy autos are going to fail unless they change! And they are running out of time. I think Ford is the only one that will make it.

denial, anger, bargaining, depression and American people are stiil in the denial/anger phase towards Chinese cars, American car companies are in bargaining and depression, German car makers are already acceptance.

So the car industries need to have the mentality of mobile phone manufacture to succeed or die.
