SsangYong Musso Ultimate XLV 2021 Review @carsales.com.au

The first utes from Hyundai and Kia are expected to be genuine Toyota HiLux-slayers, but did you know there’s already a very capable, well-equipped and affordable dual-cab 4x4 ute from South Korea on the market?

It’s called the SsangYong Musso and it’s a solid performer in almost every respect.

It doesn’t have the badge cachet of a Ford Ranger or the perceived reliability of a Toyota HiLux, but it does have a longer seven-year warranty, loads of neat features – including heated and cooled front seats – and an impressive ability to tow big loads and head off-road when required.

In fact, with a name like SsangYong Musso, which sounds more like a rare fungal infection than a capable work-and-play all-rounder, the only real problem here may well be brand awareness.

They are great utes, and would easily be the most underrated car on the market, along with it's wagon brother, the Rexton. I own a 2019 Musso SWB Ultimate, and it has been a trooper. I have had over 80, 000km of trouble free motoring. Quality wise, they are up there with the mainstream like Triton, D-MAX, Amarok, Ranger and Hilux. Refinement is second to none, it is so quiet to drive. Only suggested accessories for the Musso is the upgraded suspension, possibly airbags as well, as the stock suspension kinda sucks. One quirk of the Musso is that the indicator stalk is on the left, which is odd for a Korean car, but it's no different to driving an Amarok, or any Euro or American car. The 2.2 litre Ssangyong developed turbodiesel engine is not shabby at all, and it uses the excellent AISIN 6-speed gearbox that is in the Hilux/Fortuner/Prado, D-MAX/BT-50 and Triton.

Like any car, there is room for improvement. It would be nice if a single-cab/extended-cab version was offered, so could appeal more to tradies. That said, at least they have a leaf-sprung version for better payload, and the XLV does have a mammoth sized tub. Stock ride height could be better, and they need to fix the low tow bar on SWB models. A V6 turbodiesel would be EXCELLENT!

They aren't perfect, but then again, what car is? At the end, they are far superior vehicles to the GWM Cannon and LDV T60.

I drive a 2020 SsangYong Rexton and it’s incredible. I can only imagine this Musso Ute is just a good.

Awsome Ute's, refinement and seamless gearbox/ engine combo sold me. Cockpit ambience in unmatched by up to $75, 000 ute competitors. True strengths are on road, and coming from a petrol engined vehicle ( quiet) this was one of the few diesels I could tolerate owning long term.

This was a good review. Thanks for the video. Personally I prefer the previous grill over the new one. Actually I like the name Musso. It's Korean for Rhino. In New Zealand they are marketed as Rhino. Viewers probably didn't get a sense of how big and spacious the Musso XLV really is even though you repeatedly made that point. Yet it is easy to part due to the excellent visibility and all the tech.

Great quality KOREAN ute. Triton is now substantially more than the Musso. Narrower in the cabin and not as many features. I'd rather the Musso over the Triton. Though both are better than Chinese options.

JUST PICKED MINE UP LAST MONTH.ELX XLV... THE PUTIN WAR DIDN'T HELP. BUT I LOVE IT. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR. 40K LEFT OVER TO SPEND ON WHATEVER YOU LIKE.
I'M ONLY ADDING AIRBAGS ON REAR LEAF. NOTHING ELSE.
DRIVE IN MANUAL MODE, LITTLE CHANGE TOGGLE IS BRILLIANT. JUST USE YR THUMB. POWER MODE ON BIG HILLS. RUN IT IN PROPERLY !!!.

Ssangyong is a good car but it’s the lack of dealership here in the uk and the unwillingness of them to help the customers that gives them a bad name.
It’s all great having a warranty but if it’s like my experience of this brand in the uk 🇬🇧 which has been absolutely shocking from start to finish and it’s only as good as the garage who represents Ssangyong and they are the only official garage who can work on my car so your stuck with them and that’s why I had to get the motor omnibus in to get items replaced under warranty which they did but it took nearly 2 years due to covid, stay well clear and never ever again will I buy one due to the lack of support from their dealerships which is unfortunate as they are a nice car and drive well

Pointless unless you look at the quantity of spare parts holding within Australia. Heated steering wheel and Yep very useful in the top half of Australia.
