Citrus Tree Problems - Citrus Fruit and Blossom Drop

Показать описание
My orange & grapefruit trees usually drop 98% of their blossoms. But for me that is not a problem. The main reasons your citrus tree might be dropping blossoms and even small fruit are:
1. Late frost - that causes the part of the blossom that connects the flower to the tree to thin out and and eventually break down causing the blossoms to drop. Here in Arizona we hardly ever get frost especially that late in the spring, so that is not a problem for us.
2. Not enough nutrients in the soil - poor soil does not supply enough nutrients to the tree causing the blossoms to drop. It is a good practice to fertilize your citrus trees before they blossom.
3. Overwatering and inconsistent watering would also cause the blossoms on your citrus tree to drop.
4. The soil is not sandy enough - citrus trees like sandy soils and if your citrus tree is sitting in a regular garden or potting soil, the roots will be too wet and that could cause the blossoms and the leaves on your citrus tree to drop.

Usually, only 2% of the blossoms on your citrus tree will form a fruit because the tree can only handle so much weight. That's why, even if you are doing everything right and your citrus tree looks healthy, about 98% of the blossoms will drop.
The same thing could happen even after your citrus tree blossoms have turned into fruit. Usually, the fruit drops in the very early stages when it's no bigger than a walnut.

Also, there are citrus fruit trees that do not produce every year, so no worries if there is a year without blossoms at all.

All of the information about citrus tree problems apply to orange trees, grapefruit trees, lemon trees, lime trees and others as well.

I live in South Texas and find it hard to find good Texas grapefruit in which the membranes enclosing the fruit does not break apart so easily. I am 60 yrs. old and started eating rio grande oranges and grapefruit during the 1960s they say taste can evoke memories for example: christmas time when churches gave out food including oranges to poor needy I remember-we were poor and appreciated them. So I can say the that for me seedless oranges which came around later just do not seem sweet but tart and acidy to me. Our local H.E.B. probably get more California grapefruits which are the Star Rio Red which have coatings and the membranes fall apart. Oh, and don't get me started on about seedless watermelons and the uneven sweetnes within it. Nothing like the big seeded watermelons, where the right watermelon at the right ripeness and cut open to reveal what seemed like sugar crystals. The flavor from rind to middle was mostly the same sweetness (execption maybe the far tail end which was sometime less sweet but had nice bite anyway.

Your video made me feel better about my Satsuma Mandarin. Last year or this past winter it didn't blossom at all. It is in a grow bag and I brought it inside since tonight and tomorrow it is supposed to get down to the the 20s. I hope I get blossoms this winter. They make the house smell SO good.

I am lucky I don't have a citrus tree blossom drop problem! I must confess I don't have a citrus tree either. Nevertheless, I enjoyed your video Sasha. Thumbs up.

Great video. Will be watching out for more. Just one question for now, do I need to self-polinate an indoor lemon plant? I have read conflicting posts on this, and I'd be interested in your opinion.

Hi, my Eureka Lemon tree had a lot of flowers by the start of spring and then all of a sudden the leaves turned yellow green and a bit distorted and the flowers fell off and is left with black ends instead. I noticed a few flies and insects around it before that happened

Hi thank you for your great YouTube videos. I have a giant grapefruit tree in my front yard and a lot of the leaves are turning yellow as you mentioned. We had a very rainy season in Los Angeles, yet There is a lot of new growth coming in underneath it seems. So I don’t feel concerned. My concern is little tiny bugs that I see on my tree. I don’t know how do identify problem bugs from just normal little black bugs. Any suggestions?

Hi, I’m from australia! Thanks for the informative video!! I have a question, I have a 2 year old dwarf blood orange tree which blossomed late spring, quite a few blossoms dropped, probably only half of them made it through pollination. A lot of the oranges have them dropped off after a while, and then a storm came and took most of the remaining ones away (I hv 2 cherry sized oranges left). 😢 Would the reason be due to rainy weather, and the tree was over watered or is there a chance of something more sinister? Like parasites or diseases causing the tree to be weak and can’t hold on to the oranges? Hope to hear from you :)

Ps I have a lemon and mandarin tree next to the orange tree, same age but both survived the rain and storm etc

I live in the Caribbean. I have a potted Eureka lemon tree that I left in the care of my father whilst I was away for a while. Anyway, when I came back, the leaves had fallen (It’s a baby tree so not many) and now they are regrowing and some blooms are already turning into fruit. Also, so leaves look slightly curly. Any ideas? It’s outside but under the overhanging roof so rain will only mist it not really watering.

I still have it in the same bucket that I bought. My tree is blooming for third time in last 9 month. Is it normal? First blooming was in January when I bought it in store, second was month later and they become a about 20 fruits. They dropped except two on them, not growing and still size of walnut.
Third blooming just happened after end of summer heat on middle of September and they're dropping.
The reason thatIi still have it bucket is the Texas heat and 🌞. Wanna make sure to find best point in yard for it. I found the corner better. The sunlight make the leafs withered by 12 o'clock and burned by couple of days.

We had an Arizona citrus tree that did terribly. It was under warranty and a new one was planted after two years of trying. The new tree seems to be doing well until lately since the heat has spiked. How much water on a drip system is right and how many days per week? The leaves look like they’re burning and sometimes the whole thing looks droopy. We are watering 45 minutes 5 days a week and I was also hand watering. I tried covering the tree to provide shade at peak hours and so far so good. Also have three other baby citrus (grapefruit, lemon, and lime) all leaves are yellowing and some burning. Only the lemon has one lemon on it. I just fertilized all of them last week. Yes I know I was late. Help and thanks
