As a former atheist (now catechumen), I totally agree with this. As an atheist I spent so much time debating and "owning" uneducated Christians just to stroke my own ego, and studying philosophy in order to cope with my godless worldview. I repent heavily from this. I turned people away from God, and yet God, in his Mercy, still revealed himself to me when I sincerely opened myself up to him.

As a former atheist, when texting or writing about God, I would always capitalize the g in God. Even when I proclaimed He did not exist, it still felt wrong to not capitalize the g out of respect and a heavily suppressed fear. I felt that so deep within me, even if I would deny Him and blaspheme Him in other ways. Lord have mercy on me and forgive me, a wretched sinner.

As a former atheist… you are correct. The fear is there. You almost are hoping that it is not real… when our attitude should just be trying to find out what is real.

We have to be careful with this attitude in Orthodoxy as well. The goal is to lean on the saints, the Holy fathers, and try to find out what is true, instead of hoping for an Orthodoxy which is compatible with our world view and understanding.

If you want to see atheism in a theistic format, it's H.P. Lovecraft. No basis for believing the universe has consistent laws or will continue to exist at all creates a conception of the world like Azathoth's dream, and evolutionary creation tales are like how humans are just one of the many accidental aberrant creations of Shub-Niggurath. It's good horror for a reason.

When I was an atheist I was usually the most interested one in Christ in the room, you have to constantly work at trying to justify your lack of faith, so much ego and pride trying to debate people and prove them wrong. Horrible times being an atheist.
