The LIE You’ve Been Told about Katana #Shorts

The movement you do to pull the katana from the sheath is… this right? Even in iaido that I train in, we are taught this movement called "鯉口を切る". However there are some opinions saying that this is not practical.

When you have to draw your sword in a hurry in a real fight, there will be a slight moment before you put your thumb on the tsuba, or you may rush and cut your thumb. However, Japanese swords are tightly fastened so that they cannot be easily pulled out.

Then how are we supposed to pull the sword out?

The answer is this… Just by gripping it in, you can actually draw the katana. This way, you can eliminate the disadvantage of using your thumb.

Please try it the next time you have a chance to pull out your sword.

I always knew that Japanese pull out game was strong!

I feel like the thumb-loosening method has evolved into a type of body language. With a handgun for example, the hammer is pulled pre-emptively in movies not for long range accuracy, but as a clear warning of intent.

That's my favorite method for loosening the sword in the sheath and I've practiced it that way for years

In my decades of practice, I've found that thumbing out the katana is second nature. If in very dangerous situation, it would be better to keep the katana loose or "released", so that the tightness does not impede a flash draw cut. A flash draw cut is a sudden cut that is drawn when you are not in stance. Try smiling laughing, then suddenly draw! It is a very addictive and satisfying practice. Dangerous if not done properly.

Another method I learned was to push on the tsuba with the index finger of the left hand while it is holding the saya.

It takes more strength but it is supposed to be less likely to be noticed than pushing the tsuba with the thumb.

The face when you turn the katana upside down gives me such joy 🤣

I always thought the thumb thing was a formality that went out of the window in a real fight. .

Don’t forget that this was a Samurais last stand and that it was rarely used in combat

I have noticed this as well, I find it easier too.

The school of battojutsu I trained in when I was younger used this "squeeze" method, and also another where the first/pointer finger was held along the bottom edge of the tsuba to avoid the blade accidently coming out. But, the thumb was behind the tsuba and to the side (so not above the cutting edge) ready to push forward if need be.

We know katanas are ID locked and has a gun attachment on the sheath.

I mean Jetstream Sam uses gun parts that essentially explode his blade of his sheath.

I have a question, are you into cane swords? I've been searching around trying to find a "shikomizue" to buy because I like the straight blade and aesthetic of a cane sword
