Where the baby dtops breathing for 5-10 seconds followed by rapid breathing for 15-20 sec …
- it is not associated with bluish discolouration of palms , soles or mucous membranes, child looks absolutely okay and relaxed
This periodic breathing occurs for about 2 minutes in a total period if 10 minutes
- the duration of apnea and breathing is usually 30 seconds or less
- seen in about 35-40 % of preterm newborns
- gradual switch to normal patrern of breathing happens over a period of time
- it must be differentiated from APNEA in newborn which is a danger sign , where the baby stops breathing for mire than 10 seconds-20seconds sometimes associated with bluish discolouration of palms soles or mucous membranes and decreased heart rate , which needs immediate medical care …. Be aware of it ….
