Can LineageOS 18.1 Save your old android?

Lineage continues to impress, but I'm not just here to pat them on the back for it. Here's the good and bad things I ran into while I was reviewing it, along with a few device specific updates.

There's a lot more that I wanted to put in this review that I ended up cutting for time, such as the built in voice recorder Lineage have added in to their operating system, and even the addition of seedvault for backing your phone up, which is great since it makes it easier to make a local backup of your phone, but unfortunately I couldn't make the video as in depth as that, so instead here's a link to the post on the lineage website going over all the features they added in with this build.

*Update* In the latest version of 18.1 for the Pixel 2XL, the "Now Playing" feature appears to be working again in the notification bar. It still doesn't show on the lockscreen like it used to, but this is still an appreciated improvement.

I flashed LineageOS 18.1 on my Xiaomi Redmi 7, even tho it's a device launched ~2 years ago. Getting rid of MIUI was the best thing i did with my phone, ever.

the channel has scope for being one on ressurecting older pieces of tech. Once the algorithm kicks in it has good potential

Just installed the linage 18.1 on my S7 edge.
Realy an amazing good update.
My S7 is not only faster and snappier, but also the battery life increased with 30% longer usage!👍🏻

Lineage and Linux developers everywhere deserve much thanks for all their hard work. The chumps running malicious Win32 programs don't.

I did the same thing and love having my OPO back available. LineageOS 18.1 on OPO ROX! I'm going to run it as a daily driver for fun.

Enjoying it on my beloved HTC One M9 who refuses to die! It is snappy, smooth and fast AF again and the speakers are phenomenal again with this update no distortion or low volume 👌👌👌

I have a Poco F3, a phone with a flagship processor, MIUI didn't really do anything for me and just made the phone feel laggy. Flashing LineageOS may have been the best decision I've ever made

As someone on an older phone, I'm thankful for your perspective and qualms with the build and process. I've never used a custom ROM before so this might be my next move!

not just on old phones. Flashed an official build of LOS 18.1 on my Mi 10T Pro and I'd say it's the best thing I've ever done to get a snappier and cleaner experience on my device. I like the aesthetic of MIUI but after living with several months of bugs I'd say it's not worth sticking around. For those aficionados of the Google Pixel, "Pixel Experience" which uses LineageOS as a base plus the features and look of the Pixel phone is also a great option.

Running Lineage OS 18.1 on my Moto x4 that hasn't had an update since 2020, I'd say it runs better than the Android One ROM that was pre-installed on the device. It saved me money from buying a new phone that I couldn't afford by reviving an old phone I haven't used in a few years

im using 17.1 on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo, and i'm pretty happy with it!! An old friend of mine gave it to me along with other phones she had to back up their contents then keep them for myself, with the Neo being the best of the pile. It's much better running this vs it's stock Samsung Android. I can use NFC, wifi, bluetooth, and the camera is decent, i can expand storage and it's got a decent octacore. You have to reset it after about 67 months to keep it zippy, which isn't that much of a chore, but i may get it up to 18.1 as they are dropping any further updates for it. Im going to also do the same with an older Samsung Tab 4 running android 5 (apparently you can have it run 11 via Lineage with no issue). I agree, if you got a dust collector, get it on there - i'm gladly dailying a soon to be 8 year old phone and it's a really good experience.

Yes, custom ROMs save older Android devices. It saves all, not just old, many Android manufacturers don't update on purpose so you have to buy a new device. My main device has Android 10, I put a custom GSI ROM on it and now it has 12 with all of the latest security patches. My manufacturer wasn't updating it that much, it wasn't gonna get an upgrade to 12 at all. A custom GSI ROM made it have the latest version, with all the security patches that 12 has to offer. Custom operating systems also increase the speed, battery life, add more control, more. My phone runs better on the custom GSI ROM than it did on the stock Android 10. I will use custom operating systems forever. It saves a lot of money and it decreases electronic waste that is happening in the world. For old computers, use Linux. Old computers are in electronic waste, which is bad for the environment.

The answer is yes. I have a bootlooping Nexus 5X which I've revived with generous people's custom LineageOS build which solves the problem that causes the bootloop. There's a way to fix it and maintain the stock ROM, but the lineage version along with someone's performance kernel, it performs perfectly well. I could use it as my main phone today, but background apps tend to close.

I want to put LineageOS, or maybe some other ROM on my Pixel 6 Pro and use it for say 6 years or so. I think I'm going to degoogle it with microG. Amazingly powerful hardware that I truly believe is poorly used by stock Android. It always overheats and lags and dies quickly, factory resetting only temporarily improves things. I think lighter weight software would do wonders for this phone. It literally has more RAM than my laptop.

Lineage is good as a last option, I suggest AICP ROM, lineage 18.1 is lacking in a few basic features. Else rest is acceptable if you're coming from an extremely bad previous stock user experience
