I can see the alphabet fridge magnets are going to be coming back in style now.

As a machinist I've always been told that a magnet is the way to tell low quality stainless steel.

It's 300 which is usually austenitic but it's cold rolled so it's martensitic.

300 series (austenitic) stainless develops magnetism when cold reduced. 301 stainless has a higher carbon content which allows it to better respond to cold rolling which increases the surface hardness as well as increasing the tensile strength. The DOWNSIDE to this is that the higher carbon content makes it more susceptible to rust....which sounds like what is happening here.

Ok, if you want to dig deep, I found this —

The transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) is reviewed, where the main concepts and the recent progress in the processing and properties of AHSS are introduced. These steels utilize the TRIP effect and the enhanced work-hardening rate through the transformation of (retained) austenite in their microstructures to martensite during plastic deformation for the improvement of strength-ductility balance, which make them especially suitable for the automotive industry to be used in the lightweight car body for addressing the safety, fuel consumption, and air pollution issues.

Oh no i can see it now random people will be sticking magnets on cyber trucks as a trend

It's a proprietary 301-series ultra-hard cold-rolled stainless steel.

Its a 400 series stainless. Not special at all, actually the cheapest grade available. It's PREN value is the lowest of all grades stainless, and the ONLY MAGNETIC GRADE OF STAINLESS

Super glad it’s magnetic will help with accessories

... please try a mixture of salt, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and heat to see if it can be rusted... maybe on the smallest cheapest to replace panel, or on the back side of a panel, in case it's hard to buff out.

Could be in the 400 series stainless steel or a stainless with more chromium content making it magnetic unlike surgical stainless

And that's why it's rusting. Just like most "stainless steel" fridges if left outside.

304 is slightly magnetic, 316 is not. The main difference is the chromium content with the 316 being softer but more corrosion resistant. There are oodles more alloys that may be heat or work hardened to get the properties manufacturers are looking for.

I can't be the only one with the question: Is this good or bad that its magnetic?

Find somebody with an X-ray fluorescence gun, and get a good description of the alloy. Perhaps a local metal recycler.

yes, cold working austenitic steel creates martensite. I thought this fact was already beat to death..

What if the metal magnetize, collects steel dust and rust

I'm pretty sure most cars on the road are magnetic...except the bumpers ofcourse.
