Emulation is generally the way to go for older systems such as the GameCube because you save so much money and gain many more features to customize gameplay than the original hardware.

I would like to see a video where there are two TVs running the same game but one is emulated and one is real hardware. Then get a group of people preferably ones that complain that emulation is nothing like the original and have them see if they can tell the difference.

Everdrives are the way to go imo. It gives you that authentic feel without having to use emulation or take out a small loan for game carts.

Great video. Yea, emulation has become good enough to sell these days. Also, retroarch has that Run Ahead Latency feature which kills button delay. That's a real gamechanger

Emulation + instant save states + graphical improvements = awesome

Plus, many scumbags out there are gouging console collectors. Don't give them a dime of your money.

Emulation on an HD display is objectively miles better in every single way.

Emulation affects less experience in my opinion. It's more about accessories how playing them eg. Controllers and such. Of course it's annoying paying Wii Sports with Xbox controller, but playing with actual wiimote just makes the experience lot better.

In some cases emulation for a particular system is needed due to issues with the original system likewise. Take for example an old system like the Apple 2. I seriously doubt you will be willing to go through the trouble of looking for such an antique computer system, hooking it up, looking for games and paying out the nose for games that MAY work vs looking for some of the olde game roms.

So, in some cases you have to go for emulation or original system when the restrictions for one or the other are too extreme.

One HUGE advantage for emulation is the ability to mod games including the all important language translation.

If not for that many none English games could have never been enjoyed by those who couldn't read the game's original language.

All in all, I'd have to say for my it's about 65% pro emulation and 35% pro console.

Emulation using "Retroarch" connected to an old CRT or CRT Monitor is a good option.... along with "Run Ahead Latency" feature if needed....

I wish I would have bought the one I did off you years ago even though it's finally tweaked And probably wasn't as good as it is now back then but there's so many games that I didn't get to play in the late '80s early '90s because they just weren't rentable. I gave up trying to do my retro collection just because at my age I'm not spending hundreds of dollars for one game. All the games that I've ever wanted to play are on the 512 card that I bought. I'm starting to make a list and of course I'll probably never get through with that list but emulation is such an amazing thing and I think it's good for preserving games.

I would say that if you have a CRT then playing on the original console is better. If you don't then just play on an emulator instead of buying the original console then also buying an upscaler which will make them work on a flat screen HDTV. Handhelds are a bit different, some handhelds are kinda hard to play via an emulator like DS/3DS you lose the bottom touch screen. So I think for handhelds you kinda need the original console to experience it properly.

I like playing on handhelds so emulation for me. However, I do keep my original hardware for when I do want to have the authentic experience.

Having grown up since the days of the spectrum there was a time when emulation would of been a no no with me, but it's come on a long way now to the point that i dont usually bother with real hardware the prices for these second hand machines and games are ridiculous now, i still have a few old consoles and some games but only my favourites like the Megadrive, Snes, Nes, Master system, N64 and PS2, i also have a sony 25" crt to play them on when I'm feeling nostalgic for original hardware but these days i would prefer to play all my favourite systems out of PC RetroArch, there is so much more you can do with emulation, saves states, shaders, boosting older 3d games with higher resolution, fix slowdowns, cheats and rewind feature which lol has saved my arse more than once, so yea emulation is the path I've taken now its quick and easy and allows me to play game hacks as well, i also play these emulated systems using original controllers with the use of usb convertors, this is a must as playing with the original controller gives you the familiar feeling of running actual hardware especially playing N64 stuff.

A hybrid setup could make the experience totally authentic! A CRT TV would take care of the dreaded 320 retro situation, so emulation could be used and use a converter box via SCART if possible or S-Video. I've seen 90s MS-DOS games look pixelated as the majority of games were using retro TV resolutions on high resolution monitors comparable to HD TVs! When I checked out the same games through the CRT TV via the AverKey 3, it was like an Amiga without having to swap the floppy disks! People could also consider a decent hardware upscaler, so that means investing in a good display so it's true to the original. Later generations aren't getting the true potential of how the display should look. I think this needs a future video if you feel strongly about it.

Honestly, I don't notice any difference. I grew up with an NES in the 80s and still play it from time to time. I also play many games via emulation.

I have both Mekotronics and Nvidia Shield TV Android devices, but I also have many original consoles. I mostly used my shield for Netflix, Mekotronics which is the more powerful I used for emulators (it runs up to ps2 Really good), I can say that if you want to play retro games with really good visuals then emulation is the best, I like to use RetroArch (I like using filters on it) for older retro consoles up to ps1, Saturn and Arcade, for Dreamcast I used Redream, and For PS2 I use AetherSX2, and PPSSPP Gold, these android top boxes have great graphics cards with HDMI for my TV. Now for Nostalgia purpose I like to used the original consoles, I like to own the games I really like and play them in their original hardware, AV for new tvs sucks a$$, so I have a bunch of Hyperkin hdmi adapters (but even with those Emus on Android boxes look better), I think the only way to have good visuals on these older consoles is if you get some sort of upscaler (which cost a lot of money btw) along with the HDMI adapters or components. So the way to go if you are just a gamer that just want to play the games are Emulators with a good device.

So i have a question RP-Guy you said everdrive makes cartridges for the systems that were cartridge based why is there no everdrive for Atari Jaguar that was a cartridge based system? thanks for your videos very much subscribed 😉

Thank you for letting me know about the everdrive!

Regarding disc vs cartridge. If you keep you discs nice in a box and just play them as usual, they remain as new. Cartridges always make contact with the console and the sliding in and out of the cartridge slot always gives some wear and tear. My N64 and SNES are suffering unfortunately.
