This is good for me bc I laugh to mask discomfort & keep them engaged. But on the flip side, I don’t want to seem rude by being too chill bc I have been told I seem aloof or cold when I behave how is natural to me.

If someone says “why do you think that’s funny” and combo it with “that’s so interesting” I’m immediately clocking that they aren’t being genuine

If I hear a joke that isn't very funny, I like to try to add on to the joke or just keep talking, just responding in some way, like that. There's nothing more awkward than telling a joke, and then there's a pause and everyone just completely ignoring you. 😭 It's worse when they straight up tell you you're not funny.

i once had someone straight up say to me “you do realise you’re not funny, right?” and i have never recovered

Edit: thank you for all the kind responses

As an autistic person it sounds horrifying that I should maintain eye contact while drinking water 😂 i also hope that people won't use this if yhe joke is offensive. Like if the joke is just not funny i think its ok to make the person feel better, but if it is offensive maybe better to call the person out?

I need to learn how to tell someone not to make certain jokes that will never be funny

Unless the person is able to laugh at themselves, this actually would make them feel alienated when the laughter switches from the subject to them

Omg please don't ask people "why do you find that funny?", just move on with the conversation 😭

Uh… yeah, no. That’s one hell of a way to make someone feel totally uncomfortable! If you don’t find a joke funny, just give a little giggle and maybe add onto the joke with some of your own humor. Authenticity is important, but I think just letting the joke go without any response at all would be better than doing this.

That being said, I love the tips you give in your other videos!! This specific one just didn’t sit well with me!

What is laughter padding? What is the scenario where the term applies?

Can you recommend YouTubers like you but for male audience?

I literally just say "I don't get it" while kinda chuckling. Then if I don't find it funny i just say "omg" while chuckling a bit
