The Canary

I was named after my grandmothers in the tradition of my family
I was born after my stillborn sister
Romantic idealistic lies euphemize as fantasy
But the water always bursts first from the blister

Iridescent light leads down a path
That’s left me miserable at times
With my heart in my throat still beating, still beating

Amelia, please don’t go
Just stay
Don’t go
Amelia, please don’t go
Just stay
Don’t go
Don’t go

I remember the first time that I felt
The cool breeze upon my face
I didn’t understand it at the time
But the calling of adventure and my heart’s increasing pace
It was the ticker tape that I could not deny

I’ll cut my hair short
And I’ll sleep in my jacket so it appears worn

Oh, I’m no baggage
No willing passenger
Those women who came before me
Ain’t nothing like me, sir
Ain’t nothing like me

So this time I’ll do it, I’ll do it on my own
This time I’m going out alone
So this time I’ll do it, I’ll do it on my own
This time I’m going out alone

Amelia, please don’t go
Just stay
Don’t go
Amelia, please don’t go
Just stay
Don’t go

I can hear their pleas and cries falling far behind me
Succeed or fail, this is who I’m to become
7000 miles of ocean stand between me and my destiny
Somewhere beyond it or inside it

“Women must pay for everything.
They do get more glory than men for comparable [tasks]
But they also get more notoriety when they crash.”

Women must pay for everything
When they crash

Jfc, these guys did their homework.

"Cut my hair short" and "Sleep in my jacket so it appears worn" is a reference to when Earhart was first taking flying lessons. Expecting to be judged by other pilots during this period, she cut her hair the way other female aviators did and slept in her jacket for three nights to make it look more broken-in.

"Women must pay for everything" is also a reference to her being (partially) self-financed. She was born with money, but a lot of it went away as she grew up, and by the time she realized she wanted to take flying lessons, she was working a number of jobs to pay for it.

Canary is a reference to the first plane she bought, which she later sold due to financial hardship.

And there's a bunch more.

This band is criminally, criminally underrated. I am genuinely of the opinion that their least song is greater than the finest work of most other bands

I am getting big Kezia vibes here and I am so ready for it.
The way he lets his voice crack and the emotion it conveys is fantastic.

Hope that PTH fan from Jared Dines's video about people's band shirts is enjoying the hell out of this.

Protest is the most consistently great band I've found to date.

That guitar riff from 2:20 onwards is orgasmic. Wow. It's not the most technical riff by them ever but it flows so well. Can't get enough of this...

The singer has been running a live on twitch and he's got a small following so far. One night it was just me and him and I was asking him questions one on one. I'm sure it was nothing for him but I was fuggin fan girling on my side of the camera lol.

I love their music, I'm not even a big metal head or whatever you wanna call it but this...this is art.

The albums theme is History. This song is about Amelia Earhart. It's titled The Canary because Amelia nicknamed her plane "The Canary".
If you look up her story/biography, the lyrics start to make more sense. Actually a super good song about her life.
| Lyric explanation |
V V

"I was named after my Grandmother in the tradition of my family
I was born after my stillborn sister"
Both lines are true about her. Her family really had a *tradition* and was the second child, a year *after* her *stillborn sister.*

Amelia, in her childhood, was considered a tomboy. She wasn't all fancy and didn't like wearing dresses all the time, she was outside gathering a collection bugs and worms and.. well. Flying. Which leads to the next verse:

"I remember the first time that I felt
The cool breeze upon my face
I didn't understand it at the time
But the calling of adventure and my heart's increasing pace
It was the ticker tape that I could not deny, deny"
^This lyric is referring to 1904. Amelia's "first flight". When she was 7, She made a home-made ramp, after a rollercoaster she had rode in St. Louis, and put the ramp on the top of her family toolshed. After her eventful flight, She explained to her closest friend Paige, with a bruised lip and torn dress, that she felt a "sensation of exhilaration" and that it had "felt like flying!"

Next verse:
"I'll cut my hair short
And I'll sleep in my jacket so it appears worn
Oh, I'm no baggage
No willing passenger
Those women who came before me
Ain't nothing like me, sir
Ain't nothing like me"
Amelia was so committed to her aviation training, she cut her *hair* *short* to match other female aviators, she chose a leather jacket, aware that aviators would be judging her, then *slept* in her *jacket* for three nights to give it a more *worn* look. During her *Transatlantic flight of 1928, she willingly* accompanied pilot Wilmur Stultz and co-pilot Louis Gordon, nominally as a *passenger, * and was tasked to flight log. Once she was interviewed after, she said "Stultz did all the flying--had to. I was just *baggage* . Like a sack of potatoes". And of course, just like the lyric
"So this time I'll do it, I'll do it on my own
This time I'm going out alone"
she added, "Maybe someday I'll try it *alone* ."

The Hook:

"Amelia, please don't go
Just stay
Don't go
Amelia, please don't go
Just stay
Don't go"
Couldn't really find anything on the hook, I thought it would've been something like her husband/family/friends didn't want her to go before her final flight but I don't think so.

Final verse:

"I can hear their pleas and cries falling far behind me
Succeed or fail, this is who I'm to become
Seven-thousand miles of ocean stand between me and my destiny
Somewhere beyond it or inside it
Women must pay for everything
Women must pay for everything
They do get more glory than men for comparable (tasks)
(Women must pay for everything)
They also get more notoriety when they crash"
Amelia knew what she was doing and loved every second, it was her *destiny.* One year and six months after Amelia and Noonan's (co-pilot) disappearance, they were pronounced dead. Investigations and public interest continue to this day. Women must pay for everything is, referring to how she was born with money, but was self-sufficient and relied only on herself and (possibly) the fact that back in her age (and some today), Women pilots/inventors/etc.. didn't get the same treatment/publicity as Men. Some had to *pay* for it, some had to work extra for it, and in Amelia's case, some had to lose their life doing what they wanted/loved for it. The last lyric says just that. If Amelia didn't *crash, * she might've never been recognized for what she's known for today and, with a butterfly effect, society as a whole might've been completely different.
