“My sisters and brothers they hated so bad
To see me go west like someone gone mad
To leave all my loved ones and kiss them goodbye
Just hoping I’d see them in the sweet by-and-by.”

California promised heaven
(All the leaves are brown)
A heaven we could not deny
(And the sky is grey)
But the dust we’re running from still stalks us in the night
And all we’ve found is a bitter lie

With our lives on our backs, beat a path in the earth
Just hoping that we’d find blue skies and work
The farmlands and sawmills worked fine for a time
But with the father’s death came our decline

He that would the daughter win
Must with the mother first begin
Diligence is the mother of good luck
Diligence is the mother of good luck

They don’t need to know my name
Hide their faces, spare my children the shame
They don’t need to know my name
Hide their faces, spare my children the shame

Where is the children’s father?
Sacrificed on or left to the altar
Where is the life I was promised?
Best left unasked and best left unwanted
How did they end up here?
What are they going to do?
How did they end up here?
What are they going to do?

He that would the daughter win
Must with the mother first begin
Diligence is the mother of good luck
Diligence is the mother of good luck

California promised heaven
(All the leaves are brown)
A heaven we could not deny
(And the sky is grey)
But I’ll deny most anything
Rags and riches, gods and kings
Just need to feel the wheels underneath me

I went rock climbing with my brother. Upon getting out of the car I found a Keychain someone had left or dropped with my fiancés initial. My brother said to me, "Oh that's gotta be good luck." I turned to him and replied, "Diligence is the mother of good luck." And just kind of nodded at him. Never thought I'd get to use some protest lyrics in actual life practice. I had that moment. Thank you Rody.

Pth fans and listeners!

If you are all starting from this track and listen to the entire album from start to finish, brace yourself for a goddamn ride for the long awaited album that we all have been waiting for.

I don't know how they keep doing it, album after album of just sheer perfection. Every element is beyond reproach in every aspect. Just pure musical geniusness on all points. One of the best bands of all time, hands down.

This album has some of their best vocal melodies in their discography.

Really nice album, a lot of musical evolution, while not completely abandoning what everyone grew to love in the other albums

This is so good. PtH coming in clutch in 2020. We needed this. Rody and the guys haven’t missed a beat.

Stayed up too late last night because this was released to those who pre-ordered. For the love of your god support this band financially if you’re not too strapped. Buy some of their shit.

I've honestly listened to this whole album constantly since it came out. I think I've listened to a song outwith this album 40 times, but this album is my most played songs to date.

Honestly don’t know how I would have made it through so much darkness without your music.

Much love from Georgia, USA.

So straight up, this is my new favorite song. It's perfect in every way and that's how you open the new album.

The only constant in my life that doesn't damn disappoint me is PTH. Your music means the world to me, dudes.

Rody, you're pure gusto on this track during the "how did they end up here, what are they going to do" section makes my hair stand up every time I hear it.

2020 is hell, and this shit gets me through the day. In my little world, y'all are the bards of the proletariat revolution that's brewing.

Unrelated, but thanks for not calling it quits, and a special thanks for getting Nagle on this one. Because holy shit.

I'm a music snob. I'm in debt up to my eyeballs because I got the degree that says I can be a music snob, and to me, Palimpsest the perfect album from start to finish. It's the best PTH release yet and that's no small thing. You're yet to put out content that can be easily dismissed, but you're at the absolute top of your game with this one. Palimpsest is masterclass.

This is the best solid album ever about being broken. Quite an amazing duality.

Wow. Just discovered this band by way of 2 Minutes to Late Night and I am floored. It's Descendents meet Iron Maiden meet Rush. It's beautiful.

I've been PTH fan since Kezia, and i've loved all of their releases. I have had some time to lets this album sink in and ruminate and I am pretty confident in saying that this is probably their best album. It might be my favourite on too. I bought the tab book (first time in my life) just to learn the riffs and i'm actually sitting down and learning how to play guitar properly so that I can pull these riffs off. Thank you PTH for getting me inspired all over again 17 years later.
