In this video Jonathan Glover of the Marriage Recovery Center talks about seven reasons why couples counseling fails for many couples. Most marriage counselors will jump right into couples counseling without first assessing for behaviors and underlying conditions that make it nearly impossible for a couple to make any significant progress towards their goals. These include lack of physical and emotional safety, addictions or other untreated mental/physical conditions, pervasive defensiveness, and not being receptive to feedback. If even one of these conditions are present, it is critical that the issue(s) be addressed in individual counseling before couples counseling is advised. Find out which couples are the least likely to have a positive experience in a counseling session.

First time hearing a professional addressing that there could be an offender and the other one being the victim. Really appreciate that. What victim blame causes is victim shame.

I love this approach. Why don't most places that provide counseling do this approach?

I'm glad I stumbled across this... I'm about to take the steps forward with marriage counseling... I been with my wife for almost 10 years... The last couple of years have been extremely rough... When it was good it great but when it was bad it was really bad emotionally... She has trauma from things I have said over the years and did... I have trauma from things as well but more recent situations... I want to save my marriage because I love my wife and I know she loves me... I need the proper knowledge and tools to move forward with a healthy strong marriage... Stronger than ever before
