Most marriage counselors will jump right into couples counseling without first assessing for behaviors and underlying conditions that make it nearly impossible for a couple to make any significant progress towards their goals. These include lack of physical and emotional safety, addictions or other untreated mental/physical conditions, pervasive defensiveness, and not being receptive to feedback. If even one of these conditions are present, it is critical that the issue(s) be addressed in individual counseling before couples counseling is advised.
