Ok, let's face it 20mm pancake is NOT a portrait lens. Distortion will make your subject look really bad. I can't believe you're suggesting it to beginners...

50mm and the 85mm would really give some nice background blur which helps you with the outside photos ..

Well produced as you would expect from videojug. Easy to listen to, but you need to stay alert or watch it again!

I learned that a telephoto is the best for portraits. Wide angle will make a lot of deformations on your model face, body vs legs, etc.

Focal lengths such as 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm are used because of the perspective. Using a wide angle such as a 20mm lens would definitely exaggerate the subject's facial features to a point where it wouldn't be very flattering. The perspective of a 20mm lens looks the same weather it's on a large format, medium format, full frame, APS-C, or micro four thirds camera. The smaller the sensor, the less of a window the camera has to capture the image. Zoom is perspective, crop is the window.

I like the fact they made this digital specific but included a motor drive sound in the camera noise, nice!

The sun should NEVER be on the subjects face because that just makes people squint.

You need a DSLR like he's using or a film SLR or compact for portraits because a digit compact can't really knock the background out of focus because the sensors on digi compacts are so small.

A shorter focal length is an option with a smaller sensor camera, like the micro four thirds. Where 43-50mm is good for full frame, focal lengths as low as 28mm or lower might be valid for some crop sensor cameras with sensors below APS size.

she just said that the 20mm 1.7 is good to create a short DOF... i agree with your statement about the distortion of a wider lens though

Some nice tips here for beginners, even if they don't have a Lumix camera.
Good job!

@hocly22 I think that even 40mm is a bit short for a good portrait lens. I would usually consider 50mm at normal crop factor to be the lower limit, and anything up to 100mm as a good portrait lens focal length.

See the pictures at 3:28

The face has been distorted. And the ideal length for portraits is more like 85mm to 135mm (on full frame).. (this is the range that gives the most natural and flattering perspective.)

Maybe you should try a fisheye lens for portraits.. you could get really artistic results.. :P

she said to make sure the sun is always on the face, some of my best shots are when the sun in beside or slightly behind the face, using flash, it makes an awesome 3d looking pic.

I appreciate the work you guys put into this!
How did you make the animations for changing camera settings?

I agree Piotr, and to suggest the sun shining directly on the subjects, is so wrong

@Shamandalie97 the idea of the wide angle is to movie in as close as possible to the subject to blur out the background.
