I Use a Trackball in 2021??? - Elecom HUGE Review

Ever since this mouse showed up on my desk around 6 months ago, people have been asking "What mouse do you use?" Today, I'm going to go over my favorite mouse on the market today, and why the Trackball is not dead in 2021.

But first... What am I drinking???

From Ironhorse Brewery comes PB + Death, a 6.53% Dark Smooth Ale based on their Quilter's Irish Death beer... just with Peanut Butter added. Smooth, slightly roasty, reminds me of an ice cream sundae with chocolate and peanuts. Definitely recommended.

And the irony of reviewing my massive balls in this video is not lost on me!

your audio goes out of sync with the video in this, starting with the advertisement but a lot more perceivable when you resume the topic afterwards.

As another Jeff in the IT field, you can have my Kensington Expert Mouse Trackball when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands. I'll never go back to a regular mouse for work. Gaming, that's a different story, but for work, it's large trackball or nothing.

thumb-tracker here, switched almost 20 years ago for the same reasons you described. wore out so many logitech mice, but my elecom's been rock solid. going to try that bearing swap asap, thanks for the info!

For the wireless mouse, the trick is to use an usb 2.0 extension cable. Somehow, running those dongles in usb 3.0 ports reduces the ranges and it freezes when transferring data.

Is it just me or after 0:57 the audio is out of sync with the lips movement?

I was ranked in the top 1500 in flying the attack helicopter in BF2 thanks to the logitech trackball mouse. You wouldn't believe how long it took me to adjust a normal mouse after 10+ years.

Did anyone else notice the sound goes out of sync with the video about 2 mins in?

I'm 51 and for the last (almost) 30 years I've been using a Kensington Expert Trackball and I can't imagine using anything else. As a durability note, I'm on my second one (scroll wheel issues, bought the new one 2 years ago).
Also the idea of moving my hand to control my cursor is a foreign idea. In my defense, my first arcade game was centipede. ;)

I absolutely love my HUGE Balls. I have both the wireless and wired versions and I use them on a Linux laptop. I would definitely recommend either. For the wireless one, a form fitting case ( Hermit Shell Brand ) is a must to both protect the device and make sure the USB BT receiver does not fall out during transport.

This feels like an upgrade from the Microsoft Trackball Explorer that I've used for over a decade. Nice video!

There is another type of trackball than those you mentioned and that is the classic style of trackballs that were designed to be used with the palm and usually have the buttons surrounding it on all sides. That is the type that helped me most when I got a rather severe RSI during my IT training that wasn't healing because of a unknown side effect of a medication I have to take. Loved them for most things ever since. Also how I learned how good an IBM Model M keyboards were.

Another popular option for replacing the berrings is Zirconium Oxide which can give you an almost free roll reduction in friction.

Audio and video somehow isn’t in sync. Did someone notice this or is it just me?

For anyone taking engineering in college, I think the elecom huge wireless is a must. Of course it should be mentioned all the benefits of a trackball mouse for ergonomics (especially with marble scroll downloaded), but it is the superior mouse for portable use. I can sit on a stool with my laptop on my lap and the huge laying sideways on my stomach and use it perfectly. You absolutely may be able to get by in CS with a touchpad, but for most engineers, we will encounter some sort of 3d modeling software whether it be fusion or solidworks. It is integral to be able to use the right click, left click, and middle click while moving the mouse for most of these programs. This type of mouse allows for that while also not requiring a flat surface. Additionally, the trackball allows for an incredibly intuitive rotate view function as you can physically rotate your ball as an analogue of your model, I'd rate it above a space mouse even.

Its great that Amazon is selling these now, I got my wired version from Japan about 3 years ago when my Microsoft big red trackball broke. At the time I couldn't find anyone in the U.S. that sold them. They are great trackballs, your review is spot on.

I switched to Trackballs in 1994 for much the same reasons. I had to place my arm on a pillow to keep working (this was in college). I did not want to deal with carpal tunnel syndrome, so I bought a Logitech TrackMan II. I can count the amount of time I've used a mouse since then in hours.
I've tried finger operated trackballs but never found the same level of accuracy as the thumb operated ones.

A couple years ago I banged up my wrist and picked up an Elecom left handed wireless trackball to try out. It is very good, except for the receiver, which does like being on it's own. I used a USB 2 extension cable with it and the problem went away.
The Elecom software is a little crude compared to Logitech, but it worked well enough.

Currently using the MX Ergo Plus and Ergo M575.

I've had my MX Ergo for a few years now and unless I'm gaming I am always using it, for any type of productivity it's just better. Would love to see you review the new gaming trackball coming out, the Gameball.
