Sweden's DIY Drone Hunter 'Loke' is Perfect for UKRAINE

Today, we’re diving into Sweden’s new counter-drone system, Loke, a mobile Frankenstein of radar, machine guns, and pure Scandinavian hustle. It was built not in years but in 84 days—and it's already scoring confirmed drone hits.

In this video, I’ll break down:

How Saab and the Swedish Air Force built Loke using off-the-shelf parts—including naval guns, a wooden pallet, and an orange extension cord

Why it works: From the Giraffe 1X radar to the Trackfire remote weapon station, Loke can spot, track, and hit UAVs—including quadcopters and fixed-wing drones—without million-dollar missiles

What this means for Ukraine: With Shahed drones and FPVs wreaking havoc, systems like Loke could be a fast, scalable, and cost-effective solution

Why traditional defense procurement is too slow and how Loke represents a cultural shift in how we build and deploy battlefield tech

How Loke compares to U.S. systems like M-LIDS or Dronebuster—and why it might be the sweet spot between overengineered and underpowered

What the future looks like: Modular upgrades, bigger guns, jamming packages, and real battlefield deployment by the end of 2025

Bottom line? Loke is what happens when engineers are told, “just make it work.” And in a war where $300 drones can destroy million-dollar armor, you don’t wait for the perfect solution—you build what works right now.

If you’re into military innovation, counter-drone warfare, or just appreciate the elegance of battlefield improvisation, hit that subscribe button. We’re building a community that values speed, realism, and strategy over buzzwords and bureaucracy.

Stay frosty. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes. Crimea is Ukraine. Слава Україні!

This is classic Sweden: focused, efficient, and quietly world-class.

British Swede here. Very proud and lucky to be in Sweden. I cannot imagine UK's MOD procurement adjusting to this kind of work, but I hope they do.

Great segment, long on detail and explanation, and your enthusiasm was noticed. Your experience and actual training is a plus few can field. Good work Wes.

The Swedish Försvarets Materielverk (FMV) directly translates to Defense Materiel Department is a government organisation that is the interface between our armed forces and the defense industry. Sweden is a small country, so we can't afford to waste resouces in the way that the USA does. Broadly speaking that's also why our defense industry is at the forefront in everything we do because we're constantly trying to look ahead and come up with solutions to problems in the battlespace that hasn't materialized yet. Therefore we have Barracuda muti-spectrum camoflage, the 39 Gripen as the world's first digital and open systems architecture fighter, the CV90, the RB70 and BAMSE air defense systems and more. It's all about innovation and working collaboratively for a good end result that makes for products that the competition can't beat at a performance per cost comparison. Add some fika to that and you get a combination that nobody, and I mean nobody, can top.

SAAB and Bofors has made defence solutions since long before the first drone was an idea, and they have great engineers and they must have an Macgyver unit somewere so they made Loki and they will propably refine it and send it to Ukraine for testing. Thanks Wes for a good channel and Slava Ukraini!💙💛

Funny that I, as a Swede, get this kind of news from you (and other foreign channels) 😊
Good job. Keep it up 👍 🇸🇪 🇺🇦 💙

Great report, Wes. Every once in a while, technology forces the old guard to think outside the box, just like what happens during a fluid engagement. All we hear about is the American industrial complex when smaller countries like Sweden have to innovate with less money. Necessity is the mother of invention in a war or you lose. Slava Ukraini!

Glad to hear this (and I'd heard about Loke a bit before)! This is an example of what Ukrainians have done for a few years now. Put people together to solve a problem, try the solution and adjust what didn't work as intended. That's what brought so many incredible drones about. Now Swedish SAAB decided to let their people loose to solve a problem using existing parts and they did it! At least so far! Now, let's have it tested in real combat! And, NO!!! You DO NOT need massive projects except for a few things.

I'm not surprised that the Swedes developed this defensive weapon in record time given their previous history of developing very effective defensive weapons in the past. The 40mm Bofors dual purpose gun & the Carl Gustav weapon systems are two examples.

Challenge: Not mentioning Ikea in a video about anything even remotely related to Sweden
Difficulty: Impossible
