Once a novelty, electric cars are now becoming a normality. Tesla has been setting the benchmark ever since its Model S, its first mass produced electric car. Almost a decade on, the second generation has arrived, and it’s outrageously ‘Tesla.’

The company, headed by CEO Elon Musk, is known for making crazy claims. Many of the company’s inventions have thrown the rule book out of the window, making the unthinkable possible. Today, the company moves one step closer towards self driving reality with the 2021 Model S.

Nine years is a long time for a car to go almost unchanged, but Tesla is a little bit different. The company blends the boundaries between the automotive industry and high technology. Let’s delve into the changes that have been made this time around.

Outside, upgrades are minimal. So minimal, in fact, that the average passerby would probably not notice. Real Tesla fans will notice the updated black accents around the car - things like window frames and door handles - something that we’ve already seen replacing the traditional chrome details on the latest Model 3 and Model Y. Elsewhere, a new bumper design freshens up the front, with a modified air intake.

While other car manufacturers were content to make minor improvements over the years, cosmetic changes and some small tech advances Tesla is innovating and forcing them to change. The time has come for those futuristic concept cars to become reality.

That steering wheel looks dangerous in emergencies and fast reaction time since more than half of it isn't there anymore. In case of fast react control, you only have two small locations for your hands. Imagine how easy it is to lose those locations when the wheel turns and you suddenly have to steer differently.

the car is great but the lack of at least a gear selector is just going to take away the vehicular experience and overriding seems like unnecessary additional work especially in a car, its supposed to be a car not an iPad or at least thats what I think is expected of an automotive manufacturer. Everything else seems solid.

I'm so conflicted by Tesla. I'm looking forward to the experience of instantaneous torque and supercar performance that the car promises but I'm sad to see the inevitable transition to autonomous driving. I'm afraid it will become a "riding" experience rather than a "driving" experience. At that point it becomes a private bus to move you from one place to another and then the high performance aspect is meaningless.
