5 Military Benefits That Vets Might Not Know They’ve Earned. Veterans Benefits

Veterans could qualify for military benefits that help with housing, transportation, clothing, education and employment and more.

When veterans separate from the armed forces, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides numerous benefits to ensure that they have the support they need to succeed in their civilian life. However, for veterans managing the many unknowns of this transition, retaining the full extent of their earned military benefits can be difficult, and many veterans miss out on vital care.

To receive monthly VA disability benefits, veterans undergo a complex process that sometimes involves appeals and long wait times for help. Many resources, including Allsup Veterans Disability Appeal Services, are designed to help guide veterans through this process so they don’t have to navigate their transition alone. However, outside of the VA’s monthly compensation determined by the veterans’ disability rating, there are other veterans accommodations that are not as widely known. The VA offers an extensive range of housing, automobile, education and other benefits for veterans that can be used to address specific issues without drawing from the veterans’ monthly VA compensation.

In a 2022 survey of more than 1,000 veterans, conducted by Allsup Veterans Disability Appeal Services, 48% of veterans indicated that they do not currently understand their disability benefit options and four in 10 disagree that they received adequate benefit guidance when leaving the military – even as that same number of veterans struggle with service-related disabilities.

I separated in 1990, didn't know I could have gone to the VA until 2014, they needed to do a better job of telling Vet's what they're entitled to once leaving the service.

Never knew about secondary conditions before! Just got my decision letter which increased my combined 40% awarded in 1996 when I retired to 50%!! 🎉 My bunion was rated as 0%. Last year when my bunion became swollen and painful, I submitted for an increase and was awarded 20% for plantar fasciitis/osteoarthritis with my bunion. I learned so much from watching your channel—Thank YOU!!

You are by far the best Veteran I've ever encountered, you share what you've learned and then make VA's complexities more understandable for the rest of us. We greatly appreciate your concern for those who've served and your decency. Thanks Brother, Semper Fi!

4 out of 10 agree they were properly guided when leaving the military. I discharged in 1993 the proper guidance I received was unemployment benefits for 6 months and a sharp heel of uncle same boot right up my as.

Fortunately, I served 27 years on Active Duty so discussion of benefits outside were talked about often. I also had several peers retire before me so they kept me abreast of changes. I try and do the same for people I know still in.

I didn't think I was a veteran for years after I got out of the USAF after serving for 4 years. I thought you needed to be a combat vet! I am now in the VA System for both health care and DIC.

Brother, I love your channel and your commentary. I have a question. Do you think it is time for the Gulf War / GWOT generation of Vets to organize a march on the capital in Washington DC? Sort of a Million Vet March. Perhaps leveraging the VFW, American Legion, DAV and other organizations to assist in organizing and putting the word out. I only mention this as Vets have not marched on Washington since our fathers generation during the Vietnam war ending the draft and our great grandfathers generation after World War I in the 1920s for vet benefits. Do you think its time for vets to form up and march on Washington to be taken seriously by congress. You always mention that many hands make light work and that the squeeky wheel gets the oil. Your thoughts?

I spent 40 years with a 20% compensation until they finally looked at my records and did an MRI and found that I was supposed to be 100% P&T from back in 1975. I never received back pay from all that time, but they did pay it back one year.

Now out of curiosity I've read that when we apply for either one of these grants that it opens up the doors for the vba to go into our disability ratings and we run the risk of getting re-rated or having our ratings reduced! Now, is this a true statement?

My disability stops me from driving being legally blind, does the car bill help me? VA pays me not to work.
