the 8.2 was detroit diesel's first 4-stroke diesel which is why it uses the 2-stroke style unit injectors and a similar governor. the 6.2 was designed by detroit diesel with input from gm light truck who specifically wanted a conventional injection pump fuel system, they didn't like the unit injector system because if not set up properly or if neglected runaways are more common. the 8.2 is a great engine, i have a customer with a pair of them in a 47 foot yacht, both engines have close to 10k hours on them and still start easily in cold weather and don't smoke or burn oil. my only complaint is that detroit didn't build them for very long, so they are getting hard to find.

I had one in my 85 Jimmy 6500 flatbed, 17 years not once did it ever let me down, then got a bigger truck and sold the Jimmy to the business next door and he used it for years and years. Nice smooth running engine and VERY easy and fuel, like 15-18 MPH with the Alison automatic. The only thing I can come up with as a complaint is smoked a bit till it warmed up. BOY did that 8.2 Fuel Pincher run smooth!

The home that these engine needs is with those rare individuals that tune. A 7.3 or a 5.9, even turned up to an extreme, cant possibly catch this old burner if it its mounted in the venerable square body! 😂

I drove a new '89 Bluebird school bus with this engine hooked to an Allison & airbrakes. Somebody from the factory forgot to put the governor on it or forgot to set it. The speed limits back then were 65 & 60 for the big trucks. It sure pissed off the truckers because when I was on bus #9 with the 8.2L they couldn't outrun me when they were doing 60 & hated a school bus passing them. All other buses I drove were governed to 65 mph & most of the truckers would blow me away I tried to pass them. It needed a block heater. It didn't have one from the factory.

We 2 stroke mechanics hated working on them. They were light and flimsy. If you didn't put the valve covers on carefully, you could distort the rack rods. It was dropped when Penske bought Detroit and he wanted to focus on series 60 technology. Blocks weren't sleaved e

sounds very well. im familiar with the 6.2 sounds the same, even the valve covers and fuel rails share a resemblance. im in to the ford application 6.9 now. the 6.2 is a great motor. just a bit small for me. the later 6.9's give a little more grunt and more of a fuel cakkle. i love em.

8.2 gasket pincher. The fire deck needed to be upgrade to 15mm bolts from 81 to 84. 500 cu in. 210 to 240 hp. Turbo or NA. Very good on fuel, touchy tune up set injector heights by pinning the block flywheel then set injector height with a magnetic base dial indicator. 1000 th of mm. Not very easy to find a mechanic that was good on these. I built and tuned many of these motors.

Where is radiator on this engine, or it's an air-cooled? Another question - from what truck this engine and chassis?

the 8.2l really sounds like a 7.3l powerstroke idi, so im thinking if maybe detroit diesel uses the 7.3 because I heard that their detroit diesel series 40 is a international maxxforce dt466 idk if it is true after gm used them
