Rick and Morty: Why Morty Matters

Morty's always been my favorite character. Rick tends to be more entertaining but... Morty is so much more HUMAN. He reacts to these insane situations like how any of us would react. It's refreshing to see his trauma and character development actually get fleshed out, instead of him constantly being alongside Rick and accepting to be the butt of the joke. And he's RELATABLE! The struggles in school, the social isolation, the dysfunctional family, the parents' brief divorce, the erasure and under appreciation from others, constantly being reduced to a sidekick, it's all there. Personally, I relate to him more than any other cartoon character I've seen in a long time (besides all of the inter dimensional adventures of course). Glad to see someone else recognizing his importance :)

the fan base wants so desperately to be Rick. overly confident genius who gets what he wants when he wants and is so badass nobody in the universe can touch him. But instead they're a bunch of Jerrys. They'd rather live in a simulation in which they get to do all the fun Rick stuff than face their own reality, which is that they aren't special and they are, in fact, mediocre at best, and trying to be more just makes that more apparent than it would be if they just enjoyed the show and went about their ordinary lives like everyone else. But being Rick isn't something to strive for anyway. In case nobody noticed, Rick is fucking cynical, depressed and is the cause of all of his own problems. They should be like Morty who actually has the emotional capacity to look after someone besides himself and actually evolves as a person.

I always thought the name was Morty for mortality of being a human that goes through struggles and still has the fear of death. While Rick stands for being right or rigid, the opposite of being bent out of shape after being abused.

Another example of Morty's emotionally intelligent is when the family were infected by memory-hacking parasites, Morty was the only one who can identfy through their relationship and emotial bonds.

Great video, but I feel like there's one crucial point missing, and that is: Rick's attachment to Morty is actually the moral foundation of the show. Rick talks a lot about how nothing matters and he doesn't care about anything, but he shows that he does care about Morty. That tells me that the driving point of the show is not, as Rick says, that everything is meaningless, but that we can't escape meaning no matter how hard we try. Even with all of Rick's knowledge about the random nature of the universe, even though he knows there are infinite Mortys in infinite dimensions, and even though he doesn't want to get attached to that which he could lose, he's still human... and it's human nature to create meaning.
