Testing Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD

Here I'm just testing out the cheapest version of Sony Vegas, to see if it gives me better results than Windows Movie Maker when used with my Digital8 tape camcorder.

At first glance it is more powerful and flexible than WMM and is almost as easy to use, however when you go to save your video, it only gives you a limited amount of formats and resolutions. For example, there is no option to create a widescreen MPEG2 file, suitable for burning to DVD -- 16:9 footage will be letterboxed into a 4:3 video file, which is just stupid.

Also, just like Magix Movie Edit Pro, it takes over your video and audio codecs and disables everything except QuickTime, leaving Windows Media Player and VLC unable to play back the videos you create!

I've used this "basic" version of Vegas to edit practically all of my videos since I bought it last year. It's actually more complex than what most would expect for a $50 program. Along with basic editing, it has very good audio editing functions, many titles and transitions to use, color correcting and picture correcting functions, and chroma keyer (green screen) functions. There are also a lot of special effects tools.

Now I went with MAGIX VEGAS Pro 16.0, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0, and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0 for 59.94 fps videos.

This seems to be a pretty nice program. Currently I'm using Windows Movie Maker for YouTube videos (because it generates small but high quality files) and for home (non-YouTube) videos I'm using a almost professional program called PowerDirector. Offers all kinds of things, like animated titles and stuff.

The only thing that really bugs me about the basic version is the fact that you are limited to 4 video tracks and 4 audio tracks. If you need more tracks, you would have to upgrade to the Platinum or Pro version.

I still use Windows Movie Maker to make my videos, and have been using it for the past three years. I am however looking into a new or used copy of Sony Vegas on eBay though.

And yes, I am being careful at finding one that is genuine and not a bootleg copy.

I tried to get Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0c up and running on my Windows 11 laptop, but, all I got is an error which means that my product license is expired on October 11, 2015. Therefore, I cannot use that at all. By comparison, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0, the more-advanced version of it, aside having a different interface (SVMS HD 9.0c's interface is exactly the same as Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 and Sony Vegas Pro 8.1's own interfaces, while SVMS HD Platinum 10.0's own interface is the same as Sony Vegas Pro 9.0's interface of its own), didn't have the same "product license expired" error that Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0c had, and therefore, I was able to get that more-advanced version up and running on my gaming laptop. So, I can use that more-advanced version to edit my videos in, aside the fact that I use the Pro versions to edit videos in.

@coffzor123 Not entirely true.. It does change only the file type but Vegas can use it than.. Try it, you'll see.. Other solution would be to decode but that will only make the performance better in editing the files..

@chowmonkey2002

that doesnt changy anything but the file type, but it still a .mov file. You need a decoder to read a .mov file. download vlc or quicktime and play it with it.

Im trying to find a used or new copy on eBay myself, but it can be hard a times because most copies on eBay tend to be either keygens or bootleg copies.

Hmm... Does the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0c interface look the same as the interface of Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 (the app that I have) and Sony Vegas Pro 8.1?

Uhh... I see what you were trying to edit in SVMS HD 9.0c. You were putting a test video in it, comprising of the videos you have recorded back in 2009. The last one has a yellow outline on the sides of the screen.

What about Adobe Premiere or CyberLink Power Director?

And, Im surprised to hear that VLC Media Player can't play back any movie in Sony Vegas that you made. I believe VLC Media Player comes with it's own AV codec library and doesn't use the ones with Windows.
