Even a dish as common as salmon and rice can be full of surprises. Add one or two different ingredients and you have a whole new entree.

Take for instance salmon ochazuke: you sprinkle a little furikake seasoning blend on top and pour hot green tea over the salmon and rice. You get a gentle umami notes and the mild bitterness of tea to complement the rich salmon flavor.

We get that pouring tea over a dish is not necessarily your first instinct. Sip it on the side? Sure. You can still get the complementary flavors that way, like a classic food and drink pairing. But by submerging your salmon in tea, as the translation suggests, you get so much more to enjoy.

On cold nights, a warm bowl of stew or soup is always welcome. But green tea is easier to digest than those heavier broths and it’s much quicker to make. There’s no simmering for hours. Just put on a tea pot and let it steep for a few minutes.
