Trade Policies: U.S. - China Relations

During 2018 and 2019, the United States levied three rounds of new tariffs on U.S. imports from China. More recently, there has been increasing bipartisan support for reducing China's presence in U.S. supply chains, and new proposals from the Biden Administration invite us to reconsider U.S. commercial policy toward China. How the U.S. undertakes these adjustments will have profound implications for U.S. companies, innovators, and workers. It will also have consequences for U.S trade partners and their production networks, especially those in the Indo-Pacific region.
